Since 2003, speedcubing competitions have been held regularly. The World Cube Association was formed in 2004 to govern all official rubik competitions around the world. To make the competition become offcial, the comittee must send a request to the WCA and wait to be approved by them. Also, they need to follow the WCA regulations. Included in the regulations in the necessity of having one or more WCA delegate. A delegate main role is to ensure all regulations are followed in the competition.

The majority of puzzle competitions are held using the format of 5( average of 5). This involed the competitor executing 5 solves in the round in question, after which the fastest and the slowest solve are disregarded and the mean of the remaining 3 is used. The 6x6 and 7x7 events are ranked by straight mean of 3- only 3 solves. In 3x3 blindfolded or 3x3 fewest move challenge, either straight mean of 3 or best of 3 is used, while he 4x4 and 5x5 BLD/blindfolded, they are ranked using best of 1,2 or 3, depending on the competition. Occasionally an event is held using an uncommon format.

When a round begins, all competitior must hand the cube that their use for the competition to the scrambler. Puzzle are scrambled using the computer generated scramble. Each round 5,3 or 1( depending on the format as mentioned in the second pargraph) scrambles are used. Every competitor in the competition will recieve a scramble once each solve. The scramble are different and cannt be the same as before. Before startion a solve competitior has 15 second to look at their cube which are called inspection time (inspection is removed for blindfolded round). This is monitored by a judge with a stopwatch. If your inspection time is over 1 or 2 seconds from the limit, you will get a +2 penalty. If you inspect more than 17 seconds, you will get a DNF which stands for did not finish. Once the solve is complete, the judge will write the time of the competitor on his/her scorecard and sign in, you will also have to sign it but make sure to check the time if it is been written correct by the judge.

The official timer that is used for most of thecompetition is the stack mat timer, this timer is normally used for thecupstacking competition whcih came first before the rubiks cube competition. Thisdevice has a touch sensitive pads that are triggered by puting both of yourhand on top of them. To stop them, just do the same after you finish solving thecube. When you start, u must touch the pad using your finger, you cannot useyour palm to start the timer. once you start the timer, start solving the rubiks cube normally. then stop the timer using your hand. This time you can stop the timer using your palm.

since 2003, the winner of a competition is determine bay taking the average of the competitor. However, the single best time is also recorded. The World Cube Asocistion mantains a history of world records. Example, the first world record of cubing is hel by Minh Thai with the time of 22,95 seconds. the world record keep changing from time to time and so on.
