-Chapter 6-
Land Of Hope and Rubble
Jim was sat in the back of an army truck making his way to London. Alice was sat across from him, still not believing who he said he was. He had to find out more about her so he spoke to her.
“So were off to London then. I’ve never been there before is it nice”
Alice didn’t even make eye contact with him. She just sat there fixated on one single point not moving. He moved in and tapped her on the shoulder.
“Hello, come on Alice what did I do?”
She turned to him
“You wrecked my mission, future boy”
“So you believe me then?
“Look I don’t know if you’re from the future, an enemy spy or are a crazy person. All I know is you could of wrecked a two months in the planning mission”
Jim smiled, he had got her talking to him maybe there was hope to finding out who she was and why she was waiting for him on that cold September morning.
“And for your information London was beautiful but now it’s a city of rubble”
The truck came to a halt. They had made it to London. The back of the truck opened and they stepped out the back, it was then Jim saw London in war time for the first time. He looked around and couldn’t believe what he was seeing. Where buildings had once stood now lay rubble on the ground, shops and homes bought to the ground by one man’s dream to create a master race and rule the world for one thousand years. He looked over to his right a saw a young girl digging their way through the rubble. The child’s hands were blistered and torn from hours of digging, her clothes blood stained and covered in dirt, Jim wondered over to her and asked her what she was doing and she replied in the sweet innocent voice of a child.
“I’m looking for my mummy. Have you seen my mommy?”
Jim didn’t know what to say, he had never seen such scenes of violence and pain in his life. He felt a hand on his shoulder, it was Alice.
“Hello, what’s your name child?”
The little girl looked and came down the pile of rubble. She looked Alice in the face and circled around her as if to check if she was her mummy.
“You’re not my mummy”
“No I’m not, but I’m here to help you find her, now why don’t you come with us and well get you something to eat and get you some clean clothes”
“No. My mummy said I had to wait at home for her if we ever got separated she said she’d find me, this is my home I’m waiting here”
Jim looked up and saw to fireman pull a body from the rubble of what was the little girl’s house, it was mangled and bruised but you could tell it was a woman and probably this girl’s mother he feared, he pointed it out to Alice with a nod in the direction of the firemen. With a lump in his throat and a tear rolling down his left cheek Jim knelt down to the girls height and said.
“Come on now, surely your mummy wouldn’t want you stay out here in the cold. How about you come with us into the warm and get cleaned up and will leave someone here to let her know where you are when she turns up, ok?
The little girl looks at Jim and wipes the tear from his cheek.
“Have you lost your mummy too?”
“Yes, sort of”
“It’ll be ok, both our mummy’s will find us and when daddy comes back it will be like it was before the fire started falling”
