I woke up this morning like I did every morning, ready for the routine to begin again. But this morning was different. I went downstairs to find my mom, Joan Grande, sitting at the kitchen counter with her boyfriend. She looked a weird mix of anxious and upset. I stood at the other side of the counter and started to fix my breakfast.
"What is it, Mom?" I asked. Her boyfriend sat up straight and cleared his throat. "Good morning, John."
"Good morning, Ari."
I cringed a little. I hated when he called me that.
"So, Ariana.." Mom began. She looked at John and giggled a little. I turned away and rolled my eyes.
"As you know, John works for TEKNO."
"Yeah, the Japanese computer company."
Mom nodded. "And well.." She looked at him again this time nervously. "He's being transferred to Japan."
"Wow. Umm that's great! Congratulations." I faked a smile. Why was she telling me this?
"And he proposed to me." Mom held out her left hand showcasing the diamond ring.
"Oh my gosh, Mom! That's great! I'm so happy for you!" I hugged her tightly. "But wait, he's moving to Japan.. And you guys are getting married?" Mom nodded. And then it hit me like a ten pound weight. "You're moving to Japan?!?!"
"Oh honey, I don't know anything for sure. That's why I'm talking to you about it. If you don't want me to go, I'll stay."
"No. Go. Have fun. Live your life. Be happy. I can't have you forever I guess." But I only meant that partly. I spaced out thinking of not having my mom around, not having her come into the studio to hear my music, not having her to talk to 24/7, not having our monthly trips back home to Florida, not having my mom. Only then did I realize how much I took that convenience for granted, and that she had been talking to me the entire time I'd been thinking.
"-be here for you, I'll still love you with all my heart, no matter what or who comes into our lives."
"And you can come visit whenever you want. Our house, is your house." John added. I didn't want her to leave me but what was I supposed to do? Stop her from living her life with the man she loved? So I said yes.
And from there, it all went downhill.
I sat on my bed in my room the day of the wedding. Mom and I had been planning it for a month. By tomorrow, her and John would be on a plane to Japan. I was putting on my heels when someone knocked on the door.
"Come in." It was my boyfriend, Andrew Lowe. Andrew was cute, smart, and funny everything to want in a boyfriend. He was a youtuber and openly bisexual. Which I admired about him.
"Hey miss maid of honor!" He plopped down beside me on the bed.
"Nice suit." I said giggled. I had bought the suit for him and he hated it.
"Hahaha. Nice shoes."
"What's wrong with my shoes?"
"Nothing.." He looked away smirking.
"Seriously what is it?"
"Nothing. They're fine."
"Andrew, what's wrong with my shoes?"
"Nothing!" he grinned and stood up. "And you should hurry up. Everyone's downstairs waiting." And then he left. I never found out what was wrong with my shoes.
I went downstairs to find that only four people- my brother Frankie, my best friend Alexa, my friend Isaac, and Andrew- were waiting on not me but the bride herself.
"Well it's about time." Andrew tapped his watch. I smacked it arm.
"You said they were waiting on me."
"No, I said they were 'waiting.' I didn't say who on." I smacked him again.
They were married in our backyard. The reception was held half outside and half inside. I performed "I Have Nothing" by Whitney Houston at Mom's request. We danced and laughed and cried and danced more. Andrew suggested a Karaoke competition which he and I judged. Once everyone performed, he got on stage and sang/ screamed my song Problem. We all agreed he'd won. Mom had to leave for their flight at 3am. Alexa also had to leave so she could be back to Florida for school on time. Most everyone had left. Those who remained sat around telling scary stories.
"And then the girl grabbed his neck and whispered in his ear, oh wait gotta pee." Andrew went to use the bathroom. When he was gone, he got a text. From his mom.
It read, "hey come over later. We need to talk about this." I usually don't snoop, but if he was having problems with his mother I wanted to know. I kept reading but soon realized that this was not his mother. And then it hit me like a ten pound weight again.
My boyfriend was cheating on me.
See? Told you it all went downhill.
