Chapter 1

There are so many things that apply to love in our simple, insignificant lives. For example one year ago I was a foolish teenage girl who believed that I would someday find my true love. But the insignificance and beauty of love is what taught me the truth about my life and the purpose of why I was living it. Because before this year I felt like a rose bud, and now I feel like I've just bloomed. It was like that moment when you can see something that others found so utterly obvious. Because now I feel no longer that I am stepping over shards of broken glass and lost possibility. Because with fear comes indifference and in a way love isn't so unlike indifference, or at least our expectation of it.

When I got the call that night I couldn't contain my excitement. I started yelling around the house screaming random things. Then my happiness was crushed by my family telling me to shut up. In their defense it was 2:30 in the morning, but still.

"Kara go back to bed and turn off that stupid phone" My older sister Taylor said half asleep.

"It's important" I said annoyed, and much to her dismay I answered it anyway.

"Hello is this Miss Kara Flynn?" said a female voice over the phone.

"Yes" I said trying to sound professional but I probably sounded like a drunk duck.

"Well i'm sorry if this is a bad time but we just wanted to make sure you were aware that you have been accepted to the California prodigy institution of education or P.I.E. Classes will begin May 15th , a week from now. You will receive an email on all other information including supply list, dormitory living options, home visit times, and other primary information. Thank you and have a nice day!

"Yes!" I yelled.

"Shut up" Taylor said again.

I ignored her and continued to show my happiness.

"I got in, I got in!" I squealed while jumping up and down on my bed.

"Honey what's going on?" my mother said standing at my doorway with her eyes half closed

"I got in mom!", I said "I got into the P.I.E institute"

"That's great honey but everyone's trying to sleep so please be quieter" She said still half asleep. She let out a yawn then went back to bed.

When she left I quickly got out of bed to shut the door then I went to grab my laptop. I quickly logged on and signed in under my email.

One new email from @CaliforniaP.I.E,institute#145! The box in the corner of my screen read.

I squealed excitedly this year would be full of new friends and opportunities. One year at a prodigy prep school what could go wrong?
I woke up at 6:30 this morning because I wanted to talk to my mother about P.I.E before she left for work. My goal was to have a conversation with her where she had drank her coffee and wasn't half asleep.

"So mom can we go threw my P.I.E registration papers tonight?"

"Your what?" she said giving me a confused look.

"I got into P.I.E the prodigy institute I told you about I applied for 4 months ago, and it's all iv'e been talking about since.

"I'm sorry honey I totally forgot about that. I do remember you saying something about that a while ago though. So yes we can go threw the papers tonight" She said. I could tell she felt guilty about forgetting about something that was this important to me.

"How about since there is only 3 days of school left and you won't miss much I let you and Taylor go shopping for new summer clothes to make it up to you."

"Really mom"! I said with glee.

"Yes and i'll put a limit on my card so you guys don't go too shopping crazy." She replied then she handed me her plastic card from inside her purse.

"Wow mom thanks so much"! then I ran upstairs to get Taylor so we could leave as soon as possible.

When I reached Taylor's room I swung the door open and I found Taylor still sleeping on her bed with her mouth open and she was snoring.

"Taylor get up" I said.

She turned her head the other direction.

"Come on mom said we could not go to school today and go shopping for new summer clothes celebrating my acceptance into the P.I.E institute.

I saw one of her eyebrows go up and one eye open.

"Shopping?"

"Yes now get your lazy butt up your my ride." I said rolling my eyes.

She sprung up instantly.

"Wait downstairs i'll be ready in 5 minutes" she said.

I snorted as I left the room. If only she put as much effort towards her grades as she did shopping.

I sat on the couch waiting for Taylor. Five minutes later she walked down the stairs with her head in her phone. Somehow in five minutes she had managed to look almost flawless. She was wearing a light blue tank top with jean shorts and her hair was in a messy bun. I didn't think it was fair that my sister could look flawless without even trying but I spend an hour getting ready and I still looked awful.

She lifted her head up from her phone screen and looked at my outfit. She gave me a pitiful look.

"Darling."

"What?"  I said looking down at my blue Panic! at the disco shirt and my black jean shorts.

"Never mind lets just go." she said then she grabbed her car keys from her pocket.

We decided to go to the Valley Mall that was 20 minutes from our house. Even though there was a mall 10 minutes away from home Taylor insisted that we go to this one because they had the hottest trends whatever that meant.

We hung out at the mall until about 1:30. We had been to every store in the mall and I had bought 3 things. Taylor bought 10.

"Why didn't you buy more." Taylor asked me.

"I dunno" I responded.

"Okay" .

I bought 2 short sleeve T shirts, and a pair of jean shorts. My sister bought 7 dress shirts one pair of blue jean shorts, 3 pair of white jean shorts and and a pair of leggings.

Sometimes I wonder how me and my sister are related.
