The hot air pushed against me, as if telling me to turn back and run far, far away from the prison I was approaching. I pulled my hood up for a barrier against the outside world.
It was late August and school was starting today.
New school. New grade. New... everything.
I took the last few steps toward the double doors and pushed forward.
I was quickly engaged into a quiet conversation with my twin brother.
"I can't believe they left us to fend for ourselves." He groaned for the... I don't know, maybe thousadth time this morning.
"They didn't, remember? We have Uncle Jack." I flinched as I said his name.
"Who, that bastard? Don't remind me what he did to you." He scowled at the ground as we made our way to the school office.
"He was drunk... and... you know what? You're right. The coward is never home. Not since after he hit us."
"And he-"
"Yeah, I know." I stopped him before he could finish.
Two months ago, our parents died in a car crash. But not before they asked our uncle to take care of us. He was worthless, and not to mention an alcoholic. He hit us and abused us in many ways until he finally raped me. My brother beat him up, and then the next day, he was gone. He gave us debit cards and cars, and enough supplies to fend for ourselves. We haven't seen him since.
We reached the office and walked up to the front desk.
"How may I help you?" A frail old lady asked. If you imagined an old librarian- glasses and all -then you'd get her.
"We're new students. Carter and Jamie Smith?" I offered.
"Of course. Let me grab your schedules and such."
She reached under her desk and pulled out two manila folders.
"Here you go. If you need any directions, any of the teacher or students would be happy to help I'm sure. Just as you asked your schedules are identical, as are you." She giggled softly under her breath. "Have a good day and be sure to remember to put your locker combonations somewhere safe."
"Thanks." I murmered under my breath.
"Oh Jamie, don't feel so down. You'll have me right by your side all day." Carter slung an arm around my shoulder.
"Joy." I muttered sarcsically before ducking out of his arm and proceeding toward hell.

I shuffled into homeroom with Carter trailing behind me looking quite proud of himself.
Idiot.
Because of him, we were late. Of course he had to fall every five seconds, bringing me down with him, and getting our books mixed together in a cluttered mess. Times like this, I wonder how we're related.
"May I ask why you're late?" A young teacher asked. He looked like he just got out of college.
"Yes you may." I off-handedly muttered, too busy scowling at Carter who was glaring at any guy that even glanced my way.
There was a small chorus of laughter and the teacher looked frustrated. "Well, why are you late?"
I turned my attention to the teacher and sighed. "Two reasons. One, I can't find my way around this freaking labrinth. Two, idiot over here," I gestured to Carter who was now glaring at the teacher. "Is a klutz."
"May I ask who you are?" He chuckled.
"I'm Jamie, and this is my idiot of a brother Carter. You are?" I asked.
"I'm your teacher, Mr. Reese. Please, take a seat." He smiled warmly.
Carter was still glaring at him, so I gracefully elbowed him in the gut and made my way to the back of the classroom.
Just as I was about to sit down, Carter slid into the seat and glared at the poor guy who happened to be in the desk next to him.
I rolled my eyes at his over protectiveness, but I really loved it. Sure it was annoying as hell at times, but I loved him with all my heart.
I sat down in the empty seat next to him, and started a conversation with the girl next to me.
"Hey." I whispered.
"Hi." She cautiously replied.
"I'm Jamie." I smiled.
"Sarah." She mustered up a smile too. Her gorgeous flowing blond hair framed her small face. She had bright electric blue eyes and cute dimples with a tiny cleft (A/N: it's like a butt chin :P).
"Nice to meet you." I offered.
"Same goes to you. Is that your brother?" She asked gesturing to Carter.
"Sadly."
"He's sorta cute. Too bad I have a boyfriend." She pouted slightly.
"That boyfriend can hear you." The guy in front of her turned around with a scowl on his face.
"I'll be more caeful next time I talk about the burden you're putting on me." She grinned.
"I'm hurt." He put a hand over his chest and feigned sadness.
"You should totally be an actor, cause I completly believed you for a second." She rolled her eyes.
"Hi, I'm Sam." He offered to me.
"Jamie." I smiled.
And just like that, I was invited to the party that would change my life.
