At lunch, Cass sat with Gabe and Anna Milton. He picked at his food as Gabe ranted about something and Anna argued back to him.

Anna had very firm beliefs in whatever she believed in (Cass didn't really know what) and wouldn't back down from any argument. She had orangish-brown hair and a thin face. He eyes were incredibly wide, and her skin was very, very fair.

Her mouth slid down at the ends and her small lips were pursed in a tight line. Unless of course she was the one talking. Gabe continued on about stereotypes or peace or something.

Gabe shared very little resemblance to his brother. Gabriel had light brown hair that curled around his ears and funny voice that seemed to make everything a joke. His eyes were a completely different color from Cass's, and Gabe's face was more rounded than his brother's.

"Can I sit here?" Cass looked up to see none other than Sam Winchester, Dean's younger brother. His question had been directed to Gabe but it was evident that Gabe was actually the youngest at the table.

Sam had met Gabe in his gym class a few days ago. They were friends enough, but Sam usually sat with Dean and his football friends. But Dean had failed to show up to school by lunch.

Before Cass could say anything, Gabe answered the question which had been directed at him to begin with.

"Guys." Gabe smiled, "this is my friend Sam." Sam waved shyly at Cass and Anna.

Sam looked at the group sitting at the table.

A sophomore class-clown, a sophisticated red headed junior, and the boy in the tan jacket that couldn't feel more awkward.

Misfits, and with them Sam couldn't feel a stronger sense of belonging.

"I'm Anna." Anna said quickly reached a hand across the table. Sam shook it tentatively.

"And this is my big bro, Cass." Gabe said, slapping Cass's back. The freshman sat down nodding at Cass.

Sam was a very small kid. Cass couldn't see him getting anywhere above 5' 6" later in life. Sam, like Gabe, had light brown and that fell into his eyes. His eyes were brown and crinkled at the sides when he smiled.

"So what brings you to our table of outcasts, amigo?" Gabe looked at Sam. He just smiled as he clasped his hands together on the table.

"I... I usually sit with my brother. He's a senior, but he must've skipped the rest of the day." Cass could hear the dry worry in Sam's voice.

It wasn't necessarily unusual for Dean to leave but Sam didn't like Dean's friends and being alone with them was definitely not something he wanted to do.

"You're Dean's brother. Right?" Castiel looked at Sam. He already knew the answer.

Sam looked up at Cass. "Yeah. Yeah he's my brother."

Same loved Dean to death. There wasn't a doubt about it. But sometimes he just wanted to be 'Sam Winchester. Regular kid.' He felt like he was just 'Dean's little brother' and that was it.

"Yeah, he is in my AP Psych class. And my gym class. I think." Cass didn't have to think to remember Dean being in his gym class. Also known as harassment ground zero.

Jocks like Dean would bully kids like Castiel.

The four kids sat at the table together, just talking when someone else walked through the door to the cafeteria.

Dean scanned the room until he found Sammy. The table hadn't noticed him walk in or as he made his way over to his brother. He stopped short though when he realized who sat there.

Castiel Novak.

His back was turned to Dean but he'd recognize that tan jacket anywhere.

Then the demons came.

"You aren't good enough. You'll make a fool of yourself. He'll take one look at you turn away. You are nothing. And you don't deserve him."

Dean continued walking towards the table, trying to keep the demons away. He could feel the anger welling up in him. Anger at himself. Even as he reached the table, he struggled to give the group his best smile as he slid next to Sam.

"Hey Dean." Sam said as his older brother dwarfed him just by sitting there.

"Hey Sammy, who are your friends." Dean continued smiling. He had to be strong for Sammy. "I'm Dean."

His eyes lingered on Cass who couldn't help but stare into Dean Winchester's eyes. Green. Not pale like April's. Not tinted brown like Gabe's. But green. The most vibrant and beautiful green he'd seen.

"Hey Cass."

"Hello Dean." Cass felt his face go red as he realized he was staring.

"Uh.. this is Gabe." Sam said gesturing to Gabe who smiled like a child and wiggled his fingers in hello. "And Anna." Sam pointed to Anna who nodded curtly to Dean.

Sam watched his brother, who's eyes only darted to Anna and Gabe, but lingered on Castiel. No one else seemed to notice, or if they did they didn't show it.

"So Dean," Gabe said as Dean turned to his younger brother's friend quickly. "Where were you?"

"Oh I just went over to Harvelle's Diner for some pie. Didn't feel like going to chem either." He laughed which rippled across the table. Even Anna smiled.

Dean was able to do that. Laugh at nothing but it makes everyone else smile. It was magnetic.

Dean and Gabe kept a small conversation going that Sam would sometimes add to, but Cass and Anna stayed quiet, picking at their food.

The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch. Cass got up and made his way towards the gym.

"Cass!" Dean called, "Castiel!" He reached for the boy's shoulder.

Dean felt as though time stopped. He could feel electric currents flowing through his hand as he gripped Cass's shoulder. He slowly rubbed his thumb over the smooth fabric on Cass's coat.

"Yes Dean?" Cass said as he continued walking, shrugging Dean's hand off. Cass could feel his face get hot. Very hot.

Why was Dean Winchester all of a sudden showing such an interest in him. He couldn't help but feel like there was some kind of trick. There was almost no such thing as a genuinely nice person these days.

"We have the same gym class!" Dean said with excitement.

"Yes we do..." Cass looked at Dean. Why was Dean so ... awkward all of a sudden.

The two continued walking across the school to reach the gym. There was a noticeable tension in the air. But both decided to ignore it and enjoy the silence between them.

Cass was only focused on his destination, and therefore didn't notice the smile that Dean had on his face when he watched Cass.

A real genuine smile. The demons weren't there when he was around Cass.

Cass was like an angel, and no demons wanted to mess with an angel.

Cass turned to look at Dean and caught him smiling. Cass could feel the red that rushed into his cheeks.

He knew that smile was real. And that made Cass smile too.
