But it had been a long time since the last time that Janna had recognised rules and social pressures as adequate reasons not to go after something that she wanted. That was the reason that she found herself outside the tutorial office of Professor Lockwood at 5 p.m. that same day, with shadows lingering and lengthening in the corridor, and the cleaners murmuring and setting vacuum cleaners purring on the floor below.
His office was up on the fifth floor of the department building, a nice corner office reflecting his status in the college: a regularly published academic star, with a few pop-supernatural science books to his name and the odd intellectual chatshow appearance. By academic standards, a superstar.
