Just A Normal Day by oreotardis
It started out as just a normal day. Normal for me anyway. I woke up early because Gabriel had put gum in my hair while I was sleeping again, got ready for school, ran downstairs quietly in high hopes to avoid my father, and got out of the house to meet Gabriel and the others. We started walking together to school just as silent as normal. Anna and Balthazar continued to pester me about different things. Then finally, we made it to school and separated into our own little groups of friends.
Gabriel went to hang out with the so-called comedians, Anna went to hang out with the nerds, and Balthazar went to hang out with whoever would hang out with him. Thankfully nobody cares enough to follow me and see where I go every morning.
So I made my way behind the school, making sure no one followed, and as always they didn't. I walked out into the woods a little ways. Just enough so I could still hear the school bell when it rings so I don't miss class but also enough so nobody can see me and I can't see them. I go to my favorite tree and climb it high enough that I can still jump down when it's time to go. There's a hole next to my favorite branch that I'm surprised no one has found yet. You could get maybe a thousand dollars out of the contents of that hole. In that hole lies a sandwich bag of marijuana, some cocaine, a knife, a pack of cigarettes and a lighter, and an old whiskey bottle I've been saving for a special occasion. But what counts as a special occasion though when it feels like you're watching as your whole life is falling apart around you?
I took out my lighter and a cigarette, placing the cigarette in my mouth before lighting it and feeling immediate relief. I'd honestly been waiting for this all night. It's a bad craving to have but I do. Too late to stop now, I guess.
I take another long drag of the cigarette before hearing something I didn't think I would hear. Especially not this closeby.
"Hey, dude. You don't look like the legal age." I look down from my spot in the tree to see a boy who looks around my age. He looks familiar but I don't pay enough attention to know. He wore a brown leather jacket and jeans with boots...and I never thought bow legs could be attractive, but he made it work.
Well, I've never been caught before. What am I supposed to do when something like this happens? "Thanks for the compliment. How would you know anyway?"
"You're in my chem class and you always skip. I've followed you a few times now and I know what's up. You wanna skip the whole day this time? With me?"
"What are you? A stalker?"
"Just a guy who pays attention."
"Well, I'm busy. Besides, I have a test today."
"If you had a test today--rather, if you cared about having a test today, you'd be in more of a hurry and would have payed attention to the bell which rang," he checked his watch, "ten minutes ago...now." He paused, looking back up at me. "So you wanna get outta here or what?"
And this is the moment that changed my life. The one decision that both screwed me over and saved me at the same exact time and to this day, I have no idea how that's possible.
"Yeah, sure." Those words. Those two single words are what did it. I am a changed person because of those words. That's when my day took a turn and so did my life. I killed the cigarette and threw it on the ground beneath me, not caring what became of it. I jumped down from the tree carefully and I could almost swear I heard a quiet gasp from this boy. Speaking of which, I am about to run off with some boy I don't even know.
And that's when it began. My life.
The walk was quiet until it began to rain. That threw us both off guard. We booked it into the nearest building which happened to be a small cafe about a mile from my house and a half mile from the school. We'd already made it quite far.
"So, what's your story?" I ask when the quiet finally made me uncomfortable. We'd decided to just wait out the rain so I ordered a decaf coffee and bought him the same--against his will. Who doesn't drink coffee? This guy.
"Not much of one. What do you want to know?"
"A name would be nice. Yours would be preferred." The sass game was strong today, but his was more so.
"Dean Winchester. I'm a senior. And you're Castiel Novak, also a senior. You've somehow been on high honors since kindergarten and rumor has it you're gonna be the valedictorian for graduation." He shrugs. "I'm not a stalker, I swear. Just curious as to why you're doing this to yourself if you excel so well?"
Castiel sighed, running his hand over his face in exasperation. "Ever think there's more to someone's personality than just school? Seriously, I have a life, man." He paused, but didn't let Dean say what he wanted to. He stood up, looking out the window where the rain had just stopped. "I gotta get back to school. Like I said; test. I'm not who you think I am but what you know so far is spot on so I gotta get to class. See ya around, I guess. What was your name again?" Why was I even interested? Dean did have a certain appeal to him. He was definitely an obnoxious bastard, but oh well. Maybe I'd make a friend in my last year of high school. And if I'm being completely honest with myself, the kid was kind of beautiful. He had wide deep green eyes, and a smile that could quite literally light up the whole room. Not to mention that body. Wow.
"Dean. Dean Winchester." He cleared his throat, jotting down something on a napkin. "Text me or something."
"I'll think about it, Dean Winchester." I smirk before walking out the door and heading back to school where I came from. To be honest, the whole way I was just thinking about those pretty green eyes and when I might be able to see them again. I liked Dean, really liked him. It was a strange, foreign feeling to me. But I liked it. Maybe this year wouldn't be so bad after all. Maybe I would try to text him. To see where things go from there. Shut up, Castiel! He's not gay! He's way too perfect to be gay! Or bisexual for that matter... Or anything else that might give you the slightest of chances with him.
But what did I do? I text him.
Me: Hello, Dean. It's Castiel.
Dean: Hey, Cas.
Me: I am not familiar with who you believe you are talking to. I am Castiel Novak.
Dean: I know, dude. It's a nickname.
Me: Oh. Am I supposed to come up with a nickname for you?
Dean: No.
Me: Okay.
Dean: So how's the walk?
Me: Boring.
Dean: You could always come back to the cafe...
Me: I JUST MET YOU. I KNOW NOTHING ABOUT YOU.
Dean: Woah there. Calm down the caps lock buddy. And yes you do.
Me: It would help if you would tell me about yourself. All I know is that you have brilliantly gorgeous green eyes and I want to see you again very soon.
FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK FUCK.
Dean: That won't be a problem at all actually.
"Hey, angel!" I won't lie. I nearly jumped out of my skin.
"What the hell?!" I shouted, nonchalantly slapping his shoulder. Gosh, I'm acting weird around him. This is so different.
"Thanks for the compliment, by the way. I hear that a lot about my eyes."
"I'm sure you do. Are you following me?"
"No... Kind of... Yes." And I actually smiled for the first time in a very long time, I was genuinely happy. I couldn't even remember the last time I'd smiled. Dean Winchester had made me smile. This was the start of something good. I could tell.
