T/W: Mentions of self harm

John's POV

Sometimes sleep doesn't help.

Makes things worse. Brings the nightmares.

Sometimes sleep doesn't help because it feels helpless.

Sometimes sleep doesn't come because one feels anxious.

John can't sleep.

"John, mon ami, please talk to us," John heard Lafayette beg.

Not a chance.

They should just leave.

They don't actually care about you.

But they do.

They do.

Why would you believe that?

They helped me...

They caused your pain.

John stopped, ignoring everything around him. Lafayette, Hercules, his own thoughts, his imaginary friend.

John was in the hospital. He'd only been there for a few hours. Tests and stuff.

Stupid.

There was no point. It was obvious that he had hurt himself, and had gotten carried away.

Oh well.

He felt a push on his shoulder.

Ignored.

A tap on his shoulder.

Ignored again.

Go away, he thought.

A boop on the nose.

John's nose wrinkled up. "S-stop!" He finally turned his head to look at who it was.

Hercules grinned at him. "I knew I could get you to talk!"

John huffed. "Shut up."

Another boop.

John's cheeks flushed pink.

"Aww," Hercules chuckled.

John immediately looked away, feeling self-conscious.

Stupid face.

"Aww. Come on. Please talk to us."

He pulled the thin blanket over himself. Why couldn't hospital beds be more comfortable? Why couldn't he have a thicker blanket? Why did he have to be here anyway? He was fine.

As he ignored Hercules and Lafayette, his mind wandered to the times when he was still dating Alexander. What if he had still been with him? What would have happened? Would he have hurt himself? Would he be laying in uncomfortable hospital bed?

Maybe. But for different reasons.

Or maybe not. Maybe he would be happier if he was still with Alex.

Tears came to his eyes, wondering if everything that happened between them was a mistake. Maybe he should get back together with him.

"John?" A feminine voice said quietly. "What's wrong? Are you in pain? Do you need anything? I-I brought you your favorite cookies. It's not much, but I was hoping that it would make you feel a little better...."

Peggy.

"P-peggy?" He turned.

"Yeah. It's me. Peg leg."

John burst into tears, reaching for her. "Peggy...."

The short girl immediately went to hin, hugging him tightly. "I'm here, John. Don't you worry."

"I-I-I'm sorry," he sobbed. "I-I just... I thought..."

"John? Shut up. We still love you and care about you, and we ALL promise to be here for you, ok?"

"B-but..."

"No buts," she interrupted. She held out the cookies. "Cookie."

He gladly took one, nibbling on the edge. He looked at his friends. "I'm sorry," he whispered.

"Do not worry, mon ami," Lafayette said. "We are sorry if we ever made you feel unwanted. We are sorry if we made you feel bad."

"And we will never act like Alex did," Hercules added.

John flinched at the name.

That asshole.

They are just like Alexander. Don't listen to them. Don't trust them.

No one will ever be as bad as Alexander was.

John nodded slightly, quickly wiping away a tear that he hadn't noticed.

Before anyone could say anything, the doctor walked in.

"Hello," the doctor greeted. "I am Doctor Paine."

A small smile appeared on Jon's face before he could stop it. "Q-quite an ironic name, Doctor," he commented.

Dr. Paine looked confused for a moment before smiling slightly. "I suppose it is, Mr. Laurens."

John flinched at the name. It reminded him of his father.

He turned to the visitors. "I have a few prescriptions for John here,"-the doctor had noticed John's flinch and had changed to his first name-"and I will need someone who will ensure he will take them every day, and that he will take the specific amounts prescribed."

"I can do it," Lafayette said immediately. "We live together."

Dr. Paine nodded, and explained what each medicine did and how much he should take each day. After that, he announced, "Mr. Lau- I mean, John will just need to change into fresh clothes and then he can go home. I suggest taking a few days off from work to get use to your new medication, but after that, I'm sure everything will be much better."

Hercules held a bag up. "I have some for him right here," he grinned at John.

That grin can't be good.

The grin even made John blush a little.

Once the doctor had left, and John had changed into Hercules' outfit- a huge sweatshirt covered in llamas, and a pair of soft leggings- John joined his friends again. He had already take his medicine for the day, and somehow he was already starting to feel better.

Probably something in his head telling him that he would get better.

Maybe this will be a new start to a better life.
