Mae's Perspective
July 3rd

Avery? I saw a tall thin girl staring at white striped shoes on a clearance rack. The girl had cropped hair as if she used a knife to cut off her long blonde locks. Wait, did she cut her hair? I quietly walk over to who I thought was Avery. I swear she was Avery, just with short hair.

"Avery?" I asked unsure if it was really her.

She quickly spun around and answered "Oh, hi Mae..."

I was kind of confused with the look that was on her face. It kind of looked like a chicken questioning if he was going to be killed. I was expecting more of an excited look. Without hesitation, I gave Avery a compassionate hug as if she was just resurrected from the dead. She pulls away. What was that about?

"Hey! So, how are you?" I asked.

As Avery responded "I'm ok." her voice quivered.

It was so weird seeing her in this atmosphere. This was usually not her gig. I was only here because my brother needs a basketball to practice in the driveway.

Speaking of my brother "How's your brother?" Avery asked.

"He's good." I responded. "We're here to get a new basketball for him because the other one is flat."

She didn't know what to say so she replied with the "very original" "That's cool."

Why was she making this so awkward? It would be so much easier if Jane was still here. She was like the glue to the two popsicle sticks.

"He's playing basketball now?" Avery questioned.

"Yeah, why are you here?" I asked.

"Oh, I saw these shoes online, and I thought they would be perfect for volleyball. It's just, I'm still saving up the money."

But they're on clearance?

"Here, I'll pay for them." I said very confused.

"No, it's fine. I've got to go anyways. It was nice seeing you. See you around." Avery said "very enthusiastically".

Whatever, I'm still buying them. I walk over to the rack and pick up the shoes. I notice that they're 22 dollars. Well, there goes my allowance. I walked over to the cashier, and placed the shoes down. I gave the cashier the money, and I walked out thinking of the new ice cream place down the street. Strawberry sounds great right now.
