My knees where scratched and bleeding, my clothes were torn but I didn't care. I kept my head tucked tightly behind the thorn covered bush and gripped onto my shins. The lights from the torches danced around the dry ground, sometimes shining through the leaves of the bush making me squint. I could hear sirens in the distance and dry leaves as they crunched under footsteps. The air was so cold you could see your breath. Patches of flesh on my body that were showing had gone numb from the temperature. My back was throbbing but I couldn't make a sound. It was no longer just my life I might have put in danger. The police dogs howled and grunted as their leads restricted them. I was shaking, partly from the temperature but mostly from the situation. To think, it had all started with an English essay.

I held a slice of toast in my mouth as I frantically shoved jotters and stationary into my rucksack. I still hadn't brushed my hair or put my shoes on.

"Honestly Rebecca, I didn't get to where I am today by being disorganized," Dad shook his head. I clambered to my feet, still holding the open rucksack.

"Yes well Dad, I don't do organized, do I?" I muttered while chomping on the slice of toast. He lifted his hand to my head and smoothed down my untameable hair.

"Right, hurry up. Get your shoes on!" Dad leaned over and kissed me on the forehead. I smiled and quickly hugged him before making a dash for the doorway. I grabbed my shoes from the rack and swung open the door.

"Oh and have a lovely day Rebecca!" Dad grinned.

"Yeah! Bye Dad!" I blew a kissed as I sprinted out the door. I hopped along the cobbled path to the car.

"Miss Rebecca, the greatest of mornings to you," Lionel stuttered in his adorable English accent. He held open the door to the Bentley as always.

"Right back at you Lionel!" I smiled and threw my rucksack into the car.

"May I say Miss Rebecca, I did not know odd socks were in.... how would you say.... fashion?" I looked down at my feet and shuffled them together.

"I couldn't find a matching pair," I huffed as I threw myself in the car. Lionel politely pressed the car door shut, walked round to the driver's side and stepped in.

"So Miss Rebecca, to the school I presume?" This was Lionel's way of humour.

"If I have to..." I muttered as I slipped on my converses. Lionel peered in the mirror.

"Miss Rebecca, you know your father does not like you wearing that footwear to school!" He did this every morning.

"What Dad doesn't know won't hurt him" I giggled and so did Lionel. I liked Lionel, he was easy to talk to. I dusted down my jeans and sighed. My dad had always wanted me to go private school. School for posh snobs more like! I preferred my t-shirt and jeans compared to those awful skirts and blazers with itchy collars.

"So Miss Rebecca, is it Geography first today?" Lionel was always interested in my subjects.

"Yeah then English," I grumbled "I've got to hand in that essay on Shakespeare today, you know the one that took me all of Saturday to do?"

"Oh yes Miss Rebecca, the one that you called a useless pile of crap, if I do say?" I giggled.

"Yes that one Lionel" The car squeaked to a halt at the side of the road.

"Just here Miss Rebecca? Are you sure you do not want to drop you off nearer the school?" Lionel asked this every morning.

"Yes thank you, here is fine" I stepped out the car and slammed the door. The car engine rumbled to life and sped down the road. I didn't want anyone to see me in the car. That's why I got dropped of 5 minutes from the school. Usually people don't want to be seen in cars because they are old and embarrassing, but it was the opposite for me. My dad had worked his way up in some kind of business, I never really paid attention to what exactly but it meant that my dad had a lot of money. We lived in a stately manor and we had butlers and cooks, the works basically. Don't get me wrong, I loved it, I just didn't want the other kids at school to know. I had already encountered enough people who just wanted me for the money. My thoughts were suddenly interrupted by a voice.

"Excuse me!" I heard footsteps trudge up towards me. I turned to see a boy waving a sheet of paper in my face.

"Erm, hello?" I recognised his face, but I just couldn't place it.

"Hi, I think you dropped this?" He held out the sheet of paper. I peered at the writing.

"My essay! Oh my God! Thank you!" I grabbed it and shoved it in my bag.

"Yeah, I think you left your bag open. Here let me..." He spun me round and zipped up my rucksack.

"Eh... thanks I guess," I smiled at him.

"So, Shakespeare essay. I spent all Saturday writing mine." He laughed.

"Me too! Oh so are you in my English class?" I was puzzled.

"Eh, yeah. I actually sit two rows behind you?!" He laughed awkwardly.

"Oh sorry! Yeah English isn't one of my strongest subjects. I tend to blank it out to be honest." I admitted.

"I'm in your Biology, Maths, Social Studies and Computing and Physics classes too," He rubbed the back of his head and laughed again.

"Oh really! I thought I recognized you!" I grinned.

"Yeah...." He smiled awkwardly. The conversation started to fade.

"Yeah so anyway, thanks for the essay. Mrs Chars would have killed me!" We both laughed.

"So what have you got first?" He hinted towards the school.

"Geography, unfortunately!" I sighed.

"Cool, I've got Music. Do you want me to walk you to Geography?" He smiled again.

"Yeah, sure," We started walking, "So you took music? What do you play?"

"Just guitar... I sing a little too." He looked embarrassed to say.

"Oh cool, I've always wanted to play guitar." This was true. I had always wanted to learn but Dad preferred that I learnt something more elegant like piano.

"Well maybe I could teach you sometime?" He hinted.

"Yeah, that would be cool." The conversation went on until we got to Geography. It was funny, I was really starting to like him. Just as a friend though, nothing more. He was a really cool guy. I slid into my seat and sighed happily. I started to smile but then something hit me like a ton of bricks. I didn't know his name! Why was I so stupid! Ugh! My smile disappeared and I slouched back into my seat.

Geography passed quickly and before I knew it I was walking to English. When I stepped into the class I saw him sitting in his seat, just like he had said, two rows behind me. I smiled and gave a small wave. He smiled back. I pulled out my seat but was interrupted.

"Rebecca could you hand out the jotters?" Mrs Char instructed in her snooty voice. I grabbed the pile of jotters and dished them out without any effort. But I stopped when I came to an unfamiliar name. Jake Morgan. I starred at the name hoping it would soon ring a bell, but it didn't.

"Who's Jake Morgan?" I whispered to a guy dragging his pen across the desk.

"That guy in the fourth row, the one with black hair." He turned his head towards him. That was Jake! The boy I had been talking to! I stepped in front of him and gently placed his jotter on his desk.

"Jake," I said nodding.

"Rebecca," He nodded back and we both laughed. He knew my name!
