I was woken by the beeping of my alarm clock. Ever bleep thumped in my head louder and louder. I rolled over in my bed and pushed it off the bedside table. The thudding stopped and I slowly clambered out of bed remembering to watch out for the laptop charger I had left lying on the floor. I sleepily walked to my mirror and groaned at the sight. Mascara smeared down my cheeks, my hair a bigger frizz ball than usual and my clothes from yesterday still on. Then I remembered why. After the argument last night I had gone up to my room and cried myself to sleep. My hand slid down the mirror and I grumbled. I looked round at the pile of mess that I called clothes on the floor.

"Eh... that top... those jeans... ugh... where's a pair of socks when you need them?" I asked myself as I picked up the selected items. I yawned and rubbed my eyes, not realising that I now had mascara all down my hands. I sighed and resorted to odd socks, again.

I slid down the freshly polished banister and fell to the black and white tiled floor. I heaved myself up and ran to the kitchen.

"Morning Martha!" I had a cheery tone in my voice. Martha was my favourite cook. She made the best apple pies, better than my mum ever did.

"I see you've recovered from last nights argument pet?" She turned to face me.

"Oh you heard?" My grin quickly disappeared into embarrassment.

"I think the whole house heard you love!" She joked, but it was probably true.

"Really..." I felt ashamed.

"Don't worry yourself me love! Here I made your favourite, buttered toast and a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, just how you like it!" She dropped the plate in front of me. I grabbed the glass and gulped it down.

"Thanks Martha," My smile reappeared.

"You're very welcome my pet!" She patted me on the head in a comforting way. I giggled and put down the empty glass and snatched the toast from the plate. I hopped out the kitchen while waving with my spare hand. Martha smiled back at me. I slid along the polished floor but stopped when I reached my Dad's study door. I wasn't going to go in but I felt guilty for last night. I quietly stepped up to the huge oak door and gently tapped on it. There was no reply. I took a deep breath.

"Dad..." There was still no reply, "Ok Dad I'm off to school now. I've got my mobile with me so... just give me a ring... ok?" I wasn't sure what to say, but I was sure that I wanted him to reply. Nothing. I stepped back from the door and sighed. I had really annoyed him last night. I shook my head and tried to forget about it, I could worry after school. I ran to the doorway and grabbed my bag and shoes. I turned to shout bye to Dad but stopped just as I got the b out. I turned back to the door and left.

The car journey was mostly silent. Lionel said Hello as usual, shook his head when I slid on my converses but apart from that he never said a word. I decided to break the silence.

"So Lionel..." I was interrupted.

"Miss Rebecca, may I suggest you maybe apologise to your father?" He waited for a reply.

"I..." Lionel spoke over me again.

"Think about it for me," I decided not to reply, I thought it would be best. The rest of the journey was silent. I stepped out the car and shut the door, gently this time. I stepped back as the car drove away. I stood with my arms folded for a minute then remembered Jake. What happens if he didn't want to speak to me again? What if he didn't turn up to walk with me? No he would, he wouldn't leave me waiting without telling me. Would he?

People walked by, but not one of them was Jake. I began to get colder and decided that Jake wasn't coming. My heart sunk, he hated me for sure now. I heard the bell in the distance and decided to sprint. By the time I got to school everyone was already in their classes. I sprinted up the English stairs and quietly creaked open the classroom door. I hoped that Mrs Char wouldn't notice but she did.

"Rebecca! I do not remember the school creating a rule that obliges pupils to appear for classes at whatever time suits them?" I didn't even want to make an excuse.

"Sorry Mrs Char, it won't happen again," I droned gloomily.

"I hope you are not also late for your afterschool detention?" Detention! Ugh, my Dad was going to kill me for sure now! I walked slowly to my seat and quickly glanced behind before taking a seat. Jake was there, but he didn't look like his usual self. He didn't wave or smile, he just kept his head down and scribbled on a sheet of crumpled paper. I slouched into my seat and sighed. I was just about to go into my usual daydream when something hit the back of my head. I grasped my head with one hand and turned round to see who the culprit was. The boy sitting behind me pointed to a scrunched up ball of paper on the floor then nodded his head towards Jake. I assumed the paper had been thrown by Jake. How lovely. I picked it up and read the scribbled writing.

"Why were you late?"

"I was waiting for you!" I scribbled down my answer. I threw back the note and soon the note came flying back to my desk.

"Well I didn't exactly want to walk with you after the way you treated me yesterday!"

"Well you maybe could have mentioned that to me!"

"Oh come on! It didn't take a genius to work that out Rebecca!"

"Are you kidding me! You kissed me out of nowhere then disappeared!"

"Well that's because you acted really weird after. When I asked to walk you home you try to avoid it, making up pathetic excuses"

"That's because.... it's complicated ok"

Just as Jake was about to throw the note back to me Mrs Char interrupted.

"Jake is that a note?" The whole class turned to look at Jake.

"No miss..." Just as Jake was about to make a pathetic excuse, Mrs Char replied.

"And who were you throwing this note to?" A feeling of panic struck me. Jake was going to rumble me, I would get double detention and Dad would go ballistic. I sank into my seat hoping that he would forget about me.

"Nobody miss," Jake lied. I sat up, shocked. Jake had covered for me. He had taken the blame.

"Well Jake, what a noble gesture. Lying for a friend I see? Well you can be rewarded by an afterschool detention!" She turned back to the board, as did the class. I turned back to Jake. He was looking at the note in his hand, then he lifted his head up towards me.

"Thank you," I whispered. I think he heard me because he nodded afterwards. I hoped he heard me or detention was going to be awkward. To take my mind off it I got my mobile out. Mobiles were not allowed in class but I felt this was important enough to forget about the rules. I quickly typed the text into my phone, looking up a few times to make sure Mrs Char didn't see. The text read:

"Dad, I'm not going to be home till 5 probably. Tell Lionel not to wait for me."

I felt that a smiley face on the end was a bit inappropriate because of the situation. I knew I was going to regret this when I got home but he did say to text him. Just now I had bigger things to worry about, like detention.

Sorry if there is any spelling mistakes guys. Hope your still enjoying this. I'll try and get the next chapter up asap!<3
