____ dodged a spray of water, ducking quickly. The red seahorse slapped the water with his tail, sending another spray washing over them. The yellow mer trilled and dove back under the dark water, the moonlight making his golden scales shimmer like sunken treasure. ____ quickly shed the now soaking lab coat, leaving them in only a wet tank top and shorts. Rolling behind a rock, they took off their shoes as well. A nearby bucket caught their eye. Silently, ____ snuck over to it and filled it with water. Holding on with one hand, they scaled the smooth rock. Having an adventure filled childhood had helped hone their climbing skills.

Peering over, they saw the mers looking around confusedly. ____ smirked. The rock was low enough that, if they so wished, they could reach down and tap the large blue and red whale mer on the head. Instead, they sprung forward and threw the water onto the mers. Surprised clicks and chirps rang out, and blue eyes flicked towards the mischievous vet. The red sea horse's eyes twinkled, and he dipped under the water, out of ____'s sight.

Suddenly, he was in front of the human, having surged up out of the water. His dark grey face, still wet with ocean water, was now very close to ____'s. He smiled, and ____ could see that his teeth were sharp and pointed and were surprisingly clean and white. Now that he was so close, ____ could see the very place where his dark grey scales melded into a brilliant red. Suddenly, wet, webbed, clawed hands gripped ____'s arms and pulled them forward.

____ yelped as the two of them hit the water. The water was surprisingly warm, and the moonlight turned the water silver. The two surfaced, and ____ gasped for air. The human suddenly realised the dangerous situation they now found themselves in. The red mer had pulled her into a deeper part of the pool, and ____ was suddenly aware that they had no way to defend themselves if the mers turned vicious. Their eyes widened in fear, and they raised their guard.

The red mer, seemingly sensing their fear, lowered his ear fins apologetically and let out a soft croon, looking genuinely sorry. The other mers had come up behind the red one, and the sea turtle cuffed him on the back of the head. Sharp clicks and growls came from the others, and the large whale mer nudged ____ towards the shallows. ____ scrambled onto the shore and quickly left the room, missing the sad eyes that followed them.
