I was coming home from my walk around Los Angeles while reading my new novel, "Hound of The Baskervilles" by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. It was a very intriguing book and I wouldn't have stopped reading if I hadn't heard the very weird and interesting conversation coming from inside the DOA.
"Your name is Chiron?" a male voice said, and I instantly cringed knowing that he was talking to Charon. Trust me, he is not a big fan of being mixed up with the immortal centaur.
By this time, I had entered the building and was standing in the corner where neither Charon nor the young trio would notice me unless I wanted them to. I noticed that the male Charon was talking to had black hair and sea-green eyes, and he looked around 11 or 12. His companions were a little different, one more drastically than the other. The girl seemed to be the same age as the boy but she had golden blonde hair and grey eyes, and the other male looked to be similar in age to the other two but satyrs age quite differently than mortals. Though it was almost blatantly obvious that they were all living, but apparently Charon was too busy correcting the boy to notice.
"What a precious young lad," Charon said in an uncharacteristically sweet voice and smile. "Tell me, mate, do I look like a centaur?"
"N-no." the mystery boy said, who seemed to be either the leader or just incredibly stupid.
"Sir."
"S-sir"
I watched as Charon continued to mess with the young boy and his friends, while slightly smirking at the slightly terrified look in his eyes.
"Can you read this, mate? It says C-H-A-R-O-N. Say it with me: CARE-ON." He said in a slightly harder voice than before. Trust me if he could charm speak then the world would never question or disobey him, though he already has that effect on some spirits.
"Charon," the boy said.
"Amazing! Now: Mr. Charon"
"Mr. Charon"
"Well done." Charon sat back as if nothing happened. "I hate being confused with that old horseman." Told you. "And now, how may I help you little dead ones?" At this the boy looked to the blonde for help.
"We want to go to the Underworld," she said. This should have been clue number one to Charon that they were still living.
But Charon only slightly smiled at this statement. "Well, that's refreshing."
"It is?"
"Straightforward and honest. No screaming. No 'There must be a mistake, Mr. Charon.'" He looked the group of tweens over. "How did you die, then?"
Finally, he was catching on! I watched as the dark-haired boy nudged the satyr.
"Oh," he said. "Um ... drowned ... in the bathtub."
"All three of you?" They all nodded.
"Big bathtub." He looked somewhat impressed, I guess not then. "I don't suppose you have coins for passage." and with that, he started explaining what he meant, but I stopped listening and thought about who their godly parents might be. Yes, I had already figured out that they were demigods, but it didn't take a genius to figure it out. Especially since only a demigod like myself would be stupid enough to want to go to the Underworld.
"Oh, but we have coins." This brought my attention back to the current conversation. I was surprised, yes, I knew they were of godly descent, but I honestly didn't expect them to be well prepared, since most aren't. As I thought this, I watched the boy place down three golden drachmas on the counter.
