Typing away aimlessly on my computer, I sighed. This was not the job I wanted. I leaned back in my comfortable swivel chair and looked out the office window. It had been a nice day; I probably would've ditched work if Maddie didn't stop me, but the once calm sky had turned dark and cold. At first, I thought nothing of it, too focused on my work to register my surroundings. But when I saw a flash of green tint my office, I turned and saw what I thought to be impossible.
"Eh?" I struggled to say as I fell off my chair. I hit the ground with a thud I couldn't hear but felt. I raised a hand to my head to rub the now forming bruise. Quickly I got up and ran to the door to find Maddie.
She knew exactly what to do and signed:
"We need to go to the Edge." I looked at her incredulously and signed back:
"But there are no ships, we're stuck." She ignored me and grabbed our coats. The building was empty, everyone left but Maddie. I couldn't help but love her for that regardless of the fact that it was her sole purpose.
When we finally reached the bottom of the building, we saw that the reception area was a mess. Maddie's arm transformed to a taser automatically and her eyes turned red; she was in defence mode, ready for any immediate threat. She was unable to sign anything to me, but she projected words that I could read to understand her. "Let's move," they read as she started to walk forward. Cautiously, I followed behind her as she escorted me to an empty car outside.
To this very day, I still feel guilty. The world was ending, but all anyone could do was run towards the Edge. Only the deaf could resist the urge and think rationally. Maddie and I were able to escape from the crashing city of Eros... unlike the others.
