They had met for the first time at the creek. The water rushed past the rocks, sounding peaceful as everyone went about their lives. It was the third week of summer break, temperatures mild, because of the high elevation.
A girl was seen wading in the water, shivering a little from the cold. She called to her parents at the shore "Its cold, I'm coming back!" As she began to head for the land, she turned to her left, seeing another girl, in the water, like she was. Something about her looked familiar, but she looked past it.
Then, the girl glanced in the direction of her. The sun had shined in her luscious brown hair. She was glowing. The girl, still paused in awe at the beauty at the other then realized. It was her.
She was in disbelief, there was no way she was there. Her cheeks heated up at the thought. She turned away and walked back to her parents, who looked at her confusedly.
"Ellie what were you doing? You seem spaced out..." Her mother asked.
"Oh, it was nothing..." Ellie trailed off, looking in that direction once more. Then she looked to the finished food on the table, "I will go put the igloo up for us!"
"Okay, thank you, Sweetie."
"You're welcome," then she headed up the hill towards to their car, igloo in hand.
-
'Does she recognize me?' Ade thought to herself as she stared at Ellie from down the creek. She could recognize that red hair from anywhere. But then, she walked up the hill, not sparing her another glance.
A feeling of sadness coursed through her, knowing that she did not recognize her, or worse, Ellie did not want to see her. Ade went back to the shore too, seeing that Ellie was not in sight. She glanced towards the cars, and saw her loading an igloo into their family's car.
"I'm going to go to the restroom," Ade says to her mother and heads up the hill, in the direction of the restrooms. However, she stops just short of her own car and checks to see if this is really her Ellie.
'It has to be,' Ade says to herself as she steps closer and closer to where Ellie was.
-
Ellie heard steps approaching her, and she turned, expecting it to be one of her parents. But, it wasn't. It was her.
Ellie was still, not knowing how to react. But then, she found enough courage to politely say "Hello."
"Hi," Ade says back. Ellie, blushing, was shaking from excitement. She took a step closer. Two steps closer, until they were close enough to the point of it being maybe just, too close.
Ellie whispers softly, "Can I hug you please?" Ade nods, and Ellie wraps her arms around Ade, enclosing her in an embrace. Ellie did not want to let go. Ade was so warm, and her heart filled with joy. Tears began to well in her eyes, and one slipped, falling down her cheek onto Ade's shoulder.
"Sorry," Ellie says, wiping her eyes and her shoulder, "I am just so happy to see you..."
"Me too," Ade says, looking into Ellie's eyes.
Then, the time was just right, Ellie looks into Ade's eyes as well, saying "I love you," with all the courage she could muster.
"I love you too."
They then took each others' hands and headed for the creek below.
