boy: [shuffles to first period with downcast eyes]
girl: [in a rush, bumps into boy]
girl: [angrily] watch where you're going!
boy:
boy: sorry.
boy: [gathers books from floor]
boy: [stands, walks to class with hunched shoulders]
teacher: [turns to see boy at entrance] hello, take any seat. we'll begin in a few minutes.
boy: [hushed] okay.
boy: [scans room for empty seat]
boy: [sits down next to girl]
girl: [stares]
boy:
girl: [loses interest, turns head to face front of classroom]
teacher: welcome back from a wonderful, relaxing summer! i am sure that everyone had an incredible two-month vacation, but unfortunately, all great things must come to an end.
students: [groan collectively]
teacher: [clears throat] i promise to make your studies in chemistry as painless as possible. oh, and before i forget - these will be your seats for the remainder of the year. say "hello" to your partners!
students: [mixed chattering]
girl: [looks around]
girl: [annoyed] so we're partners, huh?
boy: yeah.
