teacher: we're going to get all of your textbooks now, so please follow me quietly.
students: [attempt to line up single file]
students: [walk out of classroom in herds]
boy: [trails behind everyone]
girl: [runs out of classroom late, closing the door behind her]
boy: [looks at girl]
girl: [glares and races ahead]
teacher: [gesturing toward cart loaded with textbooks] everybody take one. remember to sign out the books under your name.
students: [take one]
girl: [takes one]
boy: [blinks at emptied cart]
teacher: what's wrong, son?
teacher: [looks at cart] oh. well, that can be fixed. what's your name again?
boy: [pauses] declan.
teacher: [clears throat] will the partner of declan please raise his or her hand?
students:
girl:
girl: [slowly raises hand]
teacher: [smiles] hi sweetheart, you're going to have to share your book with declan. it seems that we're short on teaching equipment this year.
girl:
girl: [glances at declan]
girl: wait, really?
teacher: yes. and, don't worry. i'll give you two some leeway on exams, considering that you'll be sharing. go sign it out now.
girl: [turns around, muttering about public education's poor allocation of money]
declan: [follows girl to checkout counter]
