The thing you need to know about Lore is that she tried. She tried really hard to stay out of their arguments. But no matter how hard she tried to ignore them, they always dragged her into their conversations. Today was no different.
Three was antagonizing Floyd and Floyd was doing his best to convince Three of his point, "But think about it! If people, well normal people, thought that murder was okay everyone would be dead! It'd be like 'Oh hey, that man bumped into me on the train yesterday, STAB!' And how would we punish something if it became a social norm? It would become a stigma, like discrimination. How do we punish something that the majority of people do? A lot of people know that it's wrong, but since 70% of people do it, it has to be okay!"
"Jeez kid, I'm not saying that it should become a Thing. I'm just saying that if a person can kill another person and successfully get rid of all the evidence they should be able to get off without punishment." Three had argued.
"No one should get away with murder! Taking someone's life is a crime! It's despicable! It's- it's, it's just wrong! Who are you to decide who deserves to live or die?" Floyd countered, "And I am at least three years older than you!"
"Oh, so just because you've been around longer means that you know everything right? Well Lore agrees with me. You do remember what she did to get sent here right?" Three questioned.
"I've been in existence longer than you, of course I know more! And what Lore did or didn't do was not her fault and you know it. Come on Lore, tell her. You agree with me!" Floyd looked to Lore.
"Come on you guys leave me out of this one." Lore pleaded.
"No, I want to know your stance on this one." Three said.
"I-"
"And none of that bull crap, 'I concede to both of your points.'"
"But I-"
"No, come on now Princess, tell us how you really feel."
Lore was used to being pressured by the Terrible Two. She had her ways of distracting and diverting them. But sometimes it seemed that they would not be deterred.
"Murder isn't just a black and white thing. It's a grey area. Sometimes it's in, erm, self-defense and sometimes it's because of anger. Sometimes it's an accident and sometimes it's methodically thought out. People in the Service kill people. Are they murderers or just killers? Is there a difference? Do we even get to decide that? Does anyone?" Lore finally answered, hoping that the two would leave her alone.
"Damn Pumpkin, that was pretty deep. You see Pinky, not everyone thinks that killing someone is wrong." Three smirked at Floyd.
"Did you miss everything she just said? Because she didn't say that it was or wasn't wrong." Floyd blustered back.
"Then again, she doesn't really get a say in the whole thing does she?" Three went on, ignoring Floyd's comment.
"Three..." Floyd warned.
"She did after all practically bust that dude's head in. And he didn't even do anything to her."
"That's not the whole story and you know it."
"True, the Big Three did tell her to do it. But do we believe her when she says she blacked out? Or did she finally crack? Did she finish losing her mind? Did we finally hit the big break we've been pushing for since she was seven? Poor little Stevie did nothing to her. And she kept hitting him with that golf club until he stopped fighting."
"Stop it."
"Oh I'm sorry, are we ignoring that? Are we not supposed to talk about it where she can hear?"
"Stop it."
"Because it's not as if we can go and have this conversation anywhere else. We go where she goes remember?"
"GET OUT OF MY HEAD!" Lore finally cracked, "Get out, get out, get out!"
"Oh look what you've done now Three. You broke her. I was looking forward to continuing this conversation." Floyd said, as if it was an after-thought, while he continued to stare at the sobbing girl.
There was a knock at the door.
"Sweetheart, it's time for your pills." Nurse Heidi said after she opened the door.
"No."
"Don't take them."
"The Big Three will be angry."
"It won't be all fun and games when we come back next time, because we won't be alone."
Lore looked up and made a miserable face at Nurse Heidi.
"They don't want to go." She croaked.
"Well they don't get a say, now do they? Now take your pills. That's a good girl. Open up. See was that so hard?" Nurse Heidi left the room after making sure Lore had actually swallowed her pills.
They found the body of a hall monitor the next day. When they checked in on all of the patients to question them, they found her. She looked like she was in a peaceful sleep. But when they tried, she could not be woken up.
You see, the thing is, Lore always tried. But the Big Three made the decisions in the end.
