My nap is disrupted by the sound of commotion around me. I open my eyes and groggily sit up, not knowing what's going on yet. Doc and Pinoko are on their feet with worried expressions, which shocked me out of my daze. I realize that the rumbling barely noticeable before is now overpowering the frantic yells between them. I watch as the doctor runs towards the trap door leading to the cellar below, quickly pushing Pinoko to go down first.
"Come on!" He yells at me, holding the door open as he's part of the way down.
I get up and run, but just as I do the unbearable pain grinding in my ribcage returns. I'm forced to my knees, cursing through gritted teeth.
The rumbling and crashing of snow and rock tumbling towards the cabin is now deafening. The windows suddenly burst in front of me. I see nothing but white snow piling in and demolishing everything in it's path before I'm finally pulled down into the cellar and the door is slammed.
All that can be heard now is the muffled cracking and crushing of the cabin under the force of the avalanche. The cellar began to cave in as the doctor runs down the stairs with me in his arms.
I groan as the pain continues to worsen. I gasp and grit my teeth as he gently sets me down on the cold, cement floor. My hand makes it's way to my abdomen, finding multiple sharp objects lodged into myself.
"Glass" Black Jack muttered as he opened his briefcase.
I glance through my squinted eyes and find that, sure enough, he is prepared with everything he needs as a surgeon. He situates quickly what he will use, then before I knew it his hands were messing with my injuries. I try my best not to squirm as he looks them over, pulling my shirt halfway up and feeling around the glass shards. I dread what has to come next.
"Prepare yourself." He says, his deep voice vibrating off the now quiet surroundings. It seems the avalanche has passed, but I could hardly focus on anything else but the sharp pain.
I felt his hand slowly and carefully grip a large shard of glass, and without warning he yanks it right out of me.
"AAAArrrgh!!!!" I bite my hand as to muffle my yells and focus on the sting in my hand rather than the deep gashes in my abdominal wall. I gasp and start to shake as he grips another piece. I don't know how much more I can take of this.
He pulls out another, and by now I felt nauseous from the loss of blood. I put my other arm over my eyes and patiently waited for it to be over.
Black Jack starts blotting the area, both cleaning it and stopping the bleeding. He begins to suture the two gashes so far, and continues on to find more pieces of glass. He pulls them out carefully and swiftly, and sutures them with delicacy in his stride. Although through the agonizing pain, I can start to appreciate how quickly and professionally he works-and, of course, how many times he's saved me so far.
He gently urges me to sit up, and while I struggle he braces my back. He then begins to wrap a bandage around my torso a few times, securing his work, then pulling my shirt back down.
I put my weight onto my hands behind me and sigh, trying not to move as much as possible. I hardly notice Pinoko kneeling right next to me, her hand resting on my leg. I am thankful for her support through all this, and once I make eye contact with her I give her a smile to show I'm okay. She smiles back and sits to the right of me.
The doctor puts away his things, sitting back against the stone wall to the left of me and taking in the surroundings. The entire cellar has caved in from the debris of the cabin above. We are secluded into a tight space between all of it. Nothing but the whistling of wind and the occasional crack of bending wood is heard throughout the area.
This position was becoming uncomfortable, so I slowly lay back to ease the weight off my hands. To my surprise, I feel a soft, warm sensation on my back, contrary to the cold stone floor and walls surrounding. I seize up once I realize it's Black Jack's broad shoulder touching my back. A hand lightly grips my shoulder and encourages me to lean into him further. His warmth engulfs me and eases my soul. I rest my head onto his chest and close my eyes as his hand continues to hold me close to him. We both seem to sigh with contentment, and I smile as I feel Pinoko scoot closer to me and lean against me as well.
Although these past few days seem to have been the shittiest-most pain inducing hassle of my life, It has also been the most badass, action packed, most interesting event that's ever happened-and will ever happen-in my life. The good always seems to outweigh the bad no matter how bad it gets, and frankly, I can't wait to see what happens next.
