I wake up to find Emmie sitting at the end of my bed. I look at the time and it says 10:47 then I look at my sister who is just staring at me. "What are you doing?" I say to her.
"No good morning or did you sleep fine." She says with disappointment and a hint of sarcasm. "I could ask you the same thing" I said defending myself. "To answer your question I was waiting for you" she says. "Why were you waiting for me?" I ask. "What with all your questions" she says annoyed. "I need $5" she finally answers. "Get the hell out" I say and she walks out my door.
She's only 12 what is she gonna do with $5, buy lemonade. I get up and grab my things and head to the bathroom which is empty thank God.
When I dine getting dressed I call Lexi to pick me up so we can head to the park like we do every Saturday. When she arrives I quickly grab 2 donuts thanks to my dad and give him a heads up that I'm leaving and walk out.
I climb into the car and give Lexi her donut. "Omg I love you so much" she says with a big grin. "Love you more!" I say. I buckle up take a bite of my glazed donut. I didn't realize how hungry I was until I finished my donut within seconds.
We stop by Starbucks and go through the drive-thru. I ordered an iced coffee and Lexi got a pink drink. "So Florida I'm still In shock your gonna be so far away from me" I say as I pout. " I'll only be gone for like 3 weeks it's not long" she says to try to make me feel better. "Still you'll be gone" I say.
"What are u doing for summer?" She asks. "I literally have no idea" I say in shock. I take a sip of my coffee. Lexi pulls up to the park and we get out. "That sucks, you probably might do something I mean you always do" she says bringing my hopes up. "Yeah, I guess.
A firetruck and an ambulance pass making us both jump. "That scared me!" She says laughing. " I know nothing usually happens here" I say which is true. There's never crimes or emergencies here in Willow Creek, Connecticut.
We walk around the park for about 30 minutes and decide to head back to my house and hang out there. On our way, there were a lot of fire trucks passing which is odd.
When we turn to my neighborhood down the streets there was a burning house and as we get closer Lexi and I realize it was my house. There were fire trucks and ambulances everywhere. The sirens were so loud that my ears were getting used to them as music. There were people standing in front of their houses in shock at what was happening.
Lexi gets stops the car and we both get out and start running. The perimeter of the house was taped with the yellow crime scene tape I would see in the movies.
But that didn't stop me. I was screaming "MOM, DAD, EMMIE, CHASE" but no one answered back. A cop got in front of me and held me tight which caught me off guard. I started kicking and punching but he was too strong. "LET GO OF ME MY FAMILY IS IN THERE, LET GO OF ME"
I think he realized who I was and he lets go of me. A lady who looked like so social worker in a black suit walked up to me and said: "You must be Aurora Barrington". At this point, I was a mess. My case drowned in tears. I didn't care who the hell I was but all I wanted to know was where my family was.
"Where is my family" was all I could manage to say. I felt Lexi' s hand rest on my shoulder. "I'm deeply sorry to tell you this but your family did not survive the fire" she says with sympathy in her eyes. When she said those words to me it felt like the life was drained out of me. All I could feel was tears burning my eyes as they fell.
