Chapter 1: Sue

I ran.

Beads of sweat ran down my face, barely providing relief from the heat that was prickling my skin. I ran as fast as my feet would carry me, too scared to notice the branches that were tearing at my skin. It took a lot of willpower not to trip over the many rocks that littered the ground. Being clumsy was not an option right now.

I could hear the many screams and shrieks of the others echoing through the woods. The moonlight cast a pale wash of light over the forest, and I struggled to see what was ahead of me.

The hairs at the back of my neck stood on end. I didn't dare look behind me, in fear of seeing the thing that was reeking havoc among my peers.

I wasn't sure how many had died already, as we had all scattered in different directions, away from our campsite.

It was then that I wished I wasn't alone. It just made the fear of dying all too real. My heart was beating furiously but I refused to stop running. I was freakin' terrified.

Whatever was chasing us wasn't human. I hadn't gotten a good look at it, but whatever it was, was hell bent on killing everyone.

As I bolted around a corner and through the many trees in the dark forest, I heard a blood curdling scream nearby.

Then silence.

My breath hitched in my throat. It was close by. Death was a few feet away from me.

As fate had it, my legs gave out, and I collapsed onto the ground, the tiny stones piercing my skin and face.

Despite the burning sensation in both my chest and arms, I scrambled to my feet.

I needed a sign of human life. Anything.

Forgetting the possible dangers, I abandoned running and maneuvered myself through the woods as fast as possible.

I came to halt, trying to figure out where I was which was practically impossible since it was dark and, of course, all the trees looked the same.

I looked around, hopelessly. I was SOOOO gonna die tonight.

Me, being coward that I was, screamed when something slid around my waist and dragged me behind the nearby bush.

I kept screaming, until a hand slapped over my mouth. I wiggled in its grasp.
