"I'm so sorry for the sudden interruption, Shinra," you bowed deeply, standing in the doorway of your old friend's flat.

The guy standing in front of you was a chocolate haired boy, wearing a white lab coat and thick-rimmed glasses. His surprised eyes moved from your apologising face to the luggage standing behind you. Two fully packed suitcases indicated that you were going to stay in Tokyo for a longer time. The question was why?

"[Name], you could've called me," he raised his eyebrow, trying to figure out the reason for your unexpected comeback from the U.S.

"I thought I'd make a little surprise for you and Celty," you looked askance, fidgeting your hands behind your back. Shinra didn't miss this subtle habit of yours. You would always do that when trying to hide something uncomfortable. Normally, he would've asked about it, but this time he didn't want to pelt you with questions straight off.

"I see," he smiled instead and moved to the side to let you in. "I'm happy to see you again. Celty will be back soon," he said, helping you with the baggage.

You stepped inside and looked around the clean, simple room.

"What a nice place," you noticed when Shinra walked up to you. "So peaceful. I would never guess it belongs to someone like you".

"How did you know where to find me?," he asked with suspicion. He didn't remember telling you about his new flat. You might've been good friends but since your transfer abroad your contact had shrank.

"You should know, Shinra. There is only one underground," you smiled faintly and sat on the couch in the living room. "If you're part of it, even on the other continent, finding you isn't that hard".

Shinra, who was still standing at the entrance to the living room, suddenly ran up to you with clear distress in his eyes.

"Didn't you say you were going to America to get out of it? To legally study medicine? To leave the underground for good?," he grabbed you by the arm slightly tighter than he had previously planned to.

You pursed your lips and gathered up the courage to look into your friend's eyes. The simple and honest distress his face was showing warmed up your heart and, not for the first time, you felt more than thankful for having a friend like him. At the same time, the usual wave of guiltiness overflew you. It was because you knew that you didn't deserve somebody like him to be worried about you.

There were so many things you've never told him and which you would prefer to never tell him. Secrets that had been sealed into you even before your first encounter.

"It's okay, Shinra, I'm not in the underground anymore. I just used some contacts to get to know your address," you calmed your friend down with the most convincing smile you had in your repertoire.

The man sighed in relief and turned back to your luggage. He lifted it and disappeared in one of the guest rooms.

"You've scared me, [Name]," you could hear his voice from there.

You giggled, but your expression didn't match your cheerful attitude. You didn't want to lie to Shinra, but making him worried was an even worse option, so you decided to act as normal as you could. You could understand why the guy didn't want you to have anything in common with the dangerous job of the underground doctor. Working for the underground was extremely dangerous in general, all the more for a fragile girl like you. Shinra had Celty by his side but you had no one who could eventually protect you from some danger. That's why he was always trying to persuade you to finish the legal studies and become a professional doctor. Little did he know that getting rid of your connection with underground was impossible. No matter how much you wanted to, you couldn't fob off the marks which the past had left on you.

"Shinra, do you know where I can find a job? It can be literally anything as long as I get it quick and without signing any contract for some fixed period of time," you asked when Shinra came back to the living room. You didn't want to be a burden for him and Celty, but you needed money to find your own flat. Getting a job was inescapable.

"You're basically asking me to pull you into some shady business," your friend replied, not hiding his uneasiness. You blushed and averted your gaze.

"Well," you started hesitantly, "not so much shady but convenient, I would say", you replied. "And I can assure you that I will quit the job as soon as I gather up enough money to be able to start off properly," you added, seeing uncertainty in Shinra's eyes. This seemed to have convinced the guy. He thought for a while and suddenly his expression changed into a sour grimace.

"There is someone I know who looks for a secretary," he started slowly. He didn't really want you to have anything in common with his friend.

"Please, tell me!," you exclaimed eagerly.

The guy sighed. He was still doubtful, but he couldn't control you. Hesitantly, he replied:

"Alright. Tomorrow I'll introduce you to Izaya Orihara".
