Hey guys, sorry I didn't update quicker, but here it is :)
Pic of Josh on the side, which is obviously played by Josh Hutcherson :D
Chapter Three:
I sat down next to Charis, as usual, and pulled out a huge notepad and pen. It turned out though that I didn't need to take notes because the teacher only wanted to find out what we did today and how we did it. You would have thought though that they would have some idea of how we played but I guess some of us may have gone up a grade over the summer, right? So she went round the class asking us all if we sang or played an instrument.
Of course most people said the recorder, having played this in earlier schools. Others though, said the drums, flute, guitar, violin and in my case, the piano. Charis surprised me by saying she was a grade 5 drums and grade 3 singing. As I remember clearly, she couldn't even play the recorder before she moved, I guess she found her talent. When she got round to me, I quickly told her that I was grade 6 piano and grade 4 singing. She looked mildly impressed at my small, but proud achievements. I mean, yeah, it was amazing to be grade 6 on the piano, but having seen so many 7 year old, musical prodigies on the T.V it just doesn't seem so great.
The teacher, whose name I learnt to be Miss Fraser, asked me to come up to the front and play the piano and sing a bit for us. I shyly obliged, after watching the rest of the class play instruments amazingly, I just didn't think much of my talent. Though none of them new how to sing properly, so that felt nice.
I walked, tentatively up to the front and sat down on the piano stool. I hadn't the faintest idea of what to play so I just placed my hands on the keys, closed my eyes and let my fingers and heart guide me. Suddenly I heard the more complicated version of "Safe and Sound" by Taylor Swift. Sure a grade 1 could play it but this version was different, it had more notes and beats in a bar. As the first lines came, I took a deep breath, pushing my tummy out and sang.
The words came as easily to me as the alphabet or numbers. I had sang this song so many times. Maybe too many times. As I hit the course, I couldn't hear or feel anything but the keyboard and my voice. This feeling is the best, you couldn't even imagine! I'm not even going to try and explain it to you.
The song finally drifted to an end and when I opened my eyes again I saw the whole class staring at me. Had I really been that bad? I wondered, suddenly feeling nervous. I stood up and as I did so one person started to clap, then another and finally the whole class and Miss Fraser were clapping in unison. Another great feeling, one where you know you have entertained. I smiled and sat down again, lots of people clapping my shoulder.
'Thanks guys,' I mumbled shyly.
'That was beautiful, Maisie!' beamed Miss Fraser.
Then she finished going around the class, making anyone else that played something stand up and perform. I don't want to blow up my own trumpet or anything (pardon the pun) but no one else got the response that I did. The shrill ringing of the bell interrupted my thinking. I could hear the sound of everyone scraping back their chairs and picking up already heavy bags.
The rest of the day until lunch went by rather fast. One thing that I learnt was that somehow I had every single class with Charis, Liam and Josh. Much to Charis' delight. Not good news for me though. I still hadn't figured out what Liam's problem was, heck, I still hadn't figured out what my problem was!
I trudged down the corridors following Charis, towards the food canteen, I can only assume. I was completely relying on Charis on not getting me lost. But for some reason she really was hooked up on Josh but I couldn't figure out why. Sure he was good looking and all with chocolate brown eyes and brown hair to match, but it wasn't just about that. I really think there was something more. I made a mental note to ask her about it later, in private.
