Fiona's POV
The boys are sitting on my bed across from me. We've been hanging out for an hour now, and it was so much fun. But now I have to tell them something about me that I had wished to be able to keep to myself. We were sitting on my bed, eating pizza and talking. I stood up to get another slice when Zayn started talking to me. But I couldn't hear him talking, because I'm deaf. So he stood up and poked my shoulder. I turned around in surprise and he smiled at me and said: "I called your name five times, darling, are you ignoring me?" he laughed.
So I looked down, embarassed. It's not that I thought they would judge me, it's just that I was hoping they wouldn't have to find out, because everytime I tell someone I'm deaf, people look at me in pity and I hate that. I mean, I lost my hearing... so what? I really hated it when people pitied me and I really didn't want pity from them.
''It was a monday, in December. just three years ago. I still remember it was a week before winter break started and I was sick because Sierra, my best friend, was sick and coughed on my face several times. Anyways, I stayed home from school with my dad who stayed home from work. I was feeling better and I really wanted to spend the day with him, so I suggested we lunched out. We decided to go to our favorite restaurant, we had an amazing time together but as soon as we left the restaurant I started feeling really bad and I needed to puke, so my dad pulled over and I threw up all over the side of the road. I was fine for a couple of minutes but I needed to puke again after. I puked and puked and puked, until I fainted, because of dehydration.
''I woke up to find that I was in a hospital. I kept hearing an annoying buzzing in my head. I tried to stand up, but, instantly, pain shot through my spine. So I laid back down. The noise kept going on and on and on. The nurse came in the room and said: 'oh, you're awake!' but I couldn't hear what she was saying so I asked her to repeat for me, and I was surprised when I couldn't even hear my own words. Not sure if I even said anything, I repeated, louder. I still couldnt hear myself. So I asked her if she could hear me and she nodded, giving me a weird look. I told her that I couldn't hear myself, she looked concerned and walked out of the room.
"Two minutes later, the doctor came in with her with a look of concern on his face as well. I kept wondering what was going on. The doctor came beside me and wrote on a tiny portable white board: "you had a cold but it developed into something else and we're afraid you lost your hearing, because of the complications of the many viruses you had." I was shocked. I had lost my hearing? How on earth did that happen, it started with a tiny cold!
"Anyway, a month later, I learned to live my new life as a deaf person. I learned sign language and worked on my lip-reading skills. That way, I could communicate with everyone, since obviously not a lot of people knew ASL. I resumed my life, changing schools-I had transferred to a school for the deaf- and life continued. So yeah, that's my story."
I looked up and saw the five boys looking at me with desolation. Great. Really?! Now I had made it awkward. 'stupid girl!' I kept telling myself.
Fortunately, Liam was the first to break the scilence: "what a great story, Fiona," he said, "You're such an inspiration, you learned to live a new life - especially a very different kind of life - in such a short period of time." He smiles at me and I smile back, feeling amazing. I looked at the others and saw that they were all smiling at me, with looks of pride in their eyes. They were actually proud of me? All of this was so overwhelming, I wanted to squeal in delight.
Harry put his arm around me and continued for Liam. "I agree with Liam. You are a role-model." The boys clapped and started cheering for me.
I never wanted this day to end but sadly, it did. Their ride came to pick them up, waiting in front of my house. Tomorrow they would start their tour. The first show would be in Montreal, which was two hours away from my house, so they had to get going. The boys all hugged me and kissed me on the cheek goodbye and got out, except for one.
I turned around and look at him, surprised. "Zayn? Why aren't you following them?" I said, staring at him questioningly.
He smiled at me and said: "I wanted to wait to ask you in private: will you go out on a date with me after my concert in Montreal? I know it's far but I could come down here and then we would go somewhere- It's alright if you don't want to."
I smiled at him and said: "I'd love to, Zayn." He took off to join the guys after we exchanged numbers and he had hugged me goodbye.
That night, I went to bed, feeling amazing. I had met One Direction, had a food fight with Niall and Liam, pulled a prank on Harry with Louis, straightened Harry's hair, then scored a date with Zayn AND gotten his number. Yeah, today was the best day and I slept like a baby.
