The Mundane Shadowhunters

Chapter Four

(kenzies POV)

"So talk wolf girl, How'd this happen?" Athena leaning against a large oak tree twirling her stele between her fingers.
"Athena be nice" I say
"Well Alex and I took his car out to makeout rock and we were... You know..."
"Playing Yahtzee, of course!" Athens rolls and her eyes
"No we were having sex"
"Woooooaaahhhh no way I didn't sarcastically say playing Yahtzee, I definitely did not at all know you were fucking"
"ATHENA! stop it I don't know what has gotten into you tonight but be nice or shut up" I notice her gaze lowers to the grass at her feet and she sits downs sit against the trunk if the tree "continue Jess"
"Well yeah and I heard a noise so I got out of have a look but when I came back Alex was gone and this wolf came at me from the bushes and well" she pulls her shirt up slighty at her hip showing long claw marks, now scarred.
"And what happened to Alex?"
"Well umm he was the wolf"
"By the angel Raziel, you mean to tell me that both you and mundie boy are not infact not mundies but bloody wolves?"
"Yes" Jessica shys away, embarrassed.
"Okay one more question for you Wolfie" Athena stands up walking up to Jessica "I have never once covered my runes, in fact I wear them proudly because they show people what I am. So why why didn't you tell me, a Nephilim, what you were?"
"Well I only just learnt about the Nephilim last night that's why when I saw Kenzie tonight I had to tell her right away."
"Thank you for telling me Jess and I'm here for you just because I'm a Nephilim and your a wolf shouldn't change our Friendship" I go into hug her and she accepts, I see Athena pull a vomit face and walk away shouting I'm out.

I walk into Athena's room, arms crossed and stern looking. She's laying on her bed reading one of her many leather bound books on demonology.
"My dearest parabatai what was that behaviour tonight, Jessica is my friend this wasnt an investigation"
"Actually kenz it was. A downworlder is forbidden to hunt on humans so if that's what happened then the wolf, we now know is Alex, would have to have been handed over to the clave. Goodness have you really become such a mundane that you have forgotten our laws" she slams her book closed and stands up to face me face to face.
"I am not a mundane"
"Oh really it doesn't seem like anymore, tell me parabatai what is our motto or have you forgotten already"
"Of course not! Descensus facilitate Aveeno est... The descent into Hell is easy" I sit lean against the door frame "now  let me ask you, what has crawled up your ass an died tonight?"
She throws her arms in the air and falls back on her bed staring at the ceiling.
"I can't enter an institute, i can't step foot back in Idris, I can't go to clave meetings, I can't marry as a Nephilim could. We may be still Nephilim but we're basically exiled! The only reason they let us keep our runes and still give us missions is because there numbers dwindled so much during the war. But why is it we were punished this way from crimes we didn't commit but your sister was de-runed and kicked from the clave?"
I never told Athena the truth of what my sister did in that final battle I'm fear she would hate my family.
"When it came down to it she fought along side the Endarkend, she wasnt turned just a traitor, the clave was going to execute her but my parents pleaded, pleaded our punishment and used her age as an excuse"
"AND YOU NEVER TOLD ME!" She grabs a coat from her dresser and heads for the door "you lied to me Kenzie! How could you do that!"
"Where are you going?"
"I can't fucking he here right now! Around you, around them!"   Before I get a chance to say anything else she's gone out the front door, I chase after her but she used a locking rune on the front door.
By the time I get the rune sorted out and the door opened Athena had completely disappeared.
"Kenzie what's going on?" I hear my mother behind me wrapped in her blue night robe "where's Athena? It's almost sun up"
"She's gone... I'm not sure where or for how long"
"Oh dear come inside, what happened" she leads me back in the House in a warm embrace
"I told her the truth of how our punishment came to be"
"By the angel" she sits us both on the sofa Infront of a lit fire place "listen you both are almost 18 why don't you petition to the clave to have your sentence revoked, you both have been very loyal to the clave"
"Oh but mom if we do that and they accept us back then I will never be able to see you again or dad or crystal how ever much she hates me"
"Athena is your parabatai my dearest she's all you need, she will be your family and there will come a time where we won't be here any more but Athena will always be by your side" mother holds my hands in hers "do what needs to be done, we will always love you but you must choose what you are before anything else"
The pain in my heart is almost unbearable and I can feel tears Welling in my eyes but she is right I need to do what is right for my parabatai and i.
"If you'll excuse me mother I have a letter to write"
