The whistle blew and Wen Meixiao immediately ran out to the battlefield. Her first goal was to latch herself onto one of the higher mountains. She pulled her trusty arrows out of her backpack and got ready to aim, barely noticing that the citrus gem on her bow glowing darkly. Letting go, the arrow flew against the cold air, hitting two spirits at a time. Wen Meixiao smiled to herself, well knowing that her hard archery practices paid off.

She spotted Wei Wuxian and his friends down below, everyone else was somewhere else she didn't know. She shot her bow again when two spirits began following her, leaping onto another close structure. Once again, her bows self-consciously hurled towards the evil spirits, demolishing them.

She thought she felt her bow getting warmer but maybe it was just her imagination.

She leapt onto a tall mountain and began to make her way towards the top when her bow started getting immensely hot. The already dark gem was now emitting a dark gas which surrounded her. Fellow participants were staring at her in confusion, why was she surrounded in black mist?

A loud screech erupted and three- no ten- no twenty spirits were flying towards her, completely ignoring the other cultivators. Her bow was so hot that Wen MeiXiao dropped it suddenly, her hands scorched and throbbing.

Wen Meixiao then realized the spirits were attracted to her bow.

She picked up the bow again, this time wrapping her long sleeves around it to protect her arm from being burnt and ran away.

'Fuck the competition, I'm going to get caught using a possessed bow!' Wen MeiXiao concluded that her 'corrupted' bow that she worked so hard on, was more important than winning the contest.

She ran off, but the spirits still chased her and showed no signs of stopping. Wen MeiXiao cursed, and glanced at her bow. If this didn't stop she would get caught or have to destroy the bow.

It took her only a second to realize it was the citrine gem that was releasing an evil presence. Hesitantly, she reached out to grab the burning hot gem and pulled it off her bow.

The air was fresh again and the spirits left her alone.

Wen MeiXiao managed to escape and hide in an alleyway. She looked again at the citrine on her red hand, which was sizzling now due to the cold air. Not knowing what to do, she went back home to fix her bow.

Wei Wuxian stared at the direction Wen Meixiao went, along with all the spirits following her. He plucked one of her arrows off of the stone cliff that it was stuck on when he realized it was different than other arrows.

He knew she was up to something.

Something he too was interested in.

-----

"I can't believe I escaped!" Wen Meixiao signed in relief when she sat back down on her bed. She knew people were going to be suspicious since they were keeping track of the spirits being killed.

However, she and her precious bow were safe.

In someone else's view they might call her obsessed with that bow.

Wen MeiXiao kissed the bow affectionately. "You're so powerful." She said dreamily, hugging it. She was too scared to put the gem back on the bow, but she still didn't throw it out.

Suddenly her house door flung open and Wen Meixiao quickly hid her bow under the covers of her bed, and went to check who was entering her house.

Inside was a disheveled-looking Wen Ning who seemed to have ran all the way here.

"Wen Ning! What are you doing here?!" She asked, confused.

"What the heck was that?!" He shrieked. I saw that bow and those spirits following you from the outside!"

"You saw?!"

"Yes! But luckily I was the only one!" He sauntered closer to her. "Where is the bow! It's dangerous!"

Wen Meixiao bit her lower lip.

"Please, just get rid of it.." Wen Ning begged. "If you consider me and Wen Qing as family or at least friends, then get rid of it, for us."

Seeing Wen Ning's desperate face, Wen Meixiao stood up and hugged him. "You're right, I'll throw the bow away safely, I promise."

She didn't.
