they were both still reclining on the balcony's edge when fireworks burst through the dark night, bringing a bit of light and warmth to this awful day. some cheers were audible in the distance, only to be outshone by the dazzling trails of colours spiralling into the pitch-black sky.

changbin's lips curled in a smile, all his worries drifting away as he was hypnotized by the fireworks. they lit up the sky like the neon glow of auroras borealis. it was their own moment, their own sight. sprays of crimson lava, blazing pink and aqua green were whirling around the starry sky.

"it's beautiful" whispered the smallest.

felix didn't say anything because he was also hypnotized by this mesmerizing show, these fiery blooms amongst the stars so he just nodded in agreement. it was the first time he spent the new year's eve with someone.

during festive seasons, his best friend chan usually went in korea to spent some time with his family – who was living there obviously. even thought changbin was a complete stranger, he was still glad. huge fire circles continued to be launch, bringing joy in all the child and their parents' hearts, the vivid colours igniting the otherwise dark sea above their heads.

at the same time in the city-centre, some children were transfixed by astonishment, their mouth wide open because it was the first time they saw a such spectacle.

their parents were carrying them on their shoulders so they would able to admire the fireworks, holding their legs in a tight grip so they won't fall. their tiny hands resting on the top of their fathers' head, clapping whenever another trail was launched. the air had a tincture of gun powder but it was still pleasant.

the rays of fire still soared up in the night, each vapour trail caring glimmers of hope and life, making changbin's heart race as his eyes kept lingering on the fireworks above, searing their brilliant light onto his retinas. each one drew a different pattern into the sky, something unique and breathtaking never to be repeated exactly no matter how many are ignited and send to their sky-bound destiny.

when the show finally ended, changbin turned his head towards felix, getting lost in his dark eyes in which shimmered the moon's reflection as he whispered again:

"happy new year felix"

"happy new year" the latter responded, his bright smile visible again.

they both just stay here, after a while felix finally brought two chairs so they wouldn't spend the rest of the night standing in the dark. since the temperatures were rather hot during the day, the night zephyr skimming their faces was pretty agreeable.

they were just talking yet it made changbin really happy. he always cherished simple things like that, a night talk on a rooftop or a balcony just staring at the dazzling sky, a bicycle ride with his friends, it was way enough.

"you said you were living alone, where are your parents then?" the smallest finally asked, this question arousing his curiosity.

"they are really busy because of their work so i don't see them a lot"

"that's a bit sad, i wish you'll be able to see them more often"

felix didn't add anything, not really wanting to talk about his parents. Instead he asked to changbin if he wanted him to show him some good places in sydney since he was new here. even though changbin arrived a month ago, to be honest he didn't really come out of the flat the first days. he was too busy regretting his life back then in Korea as if it was some distant memory.

he then learned how to put things into perspective, telling himself that the time gap between the two countries was negligible; it wasn't like he moved out on the other side of the world. well okay, flights between sydney to seoul were ten hours flights minimum and it's not like changbin was rich. but he didn't lose hope, reassuring himself by telling that since he was an adult, he could just save some money and then come back whenever he wanted to.
