It was pouring as the young woman dashed through the streets, remaining in the shadows as to not be seen. She glanced down at the bundle of cloth in her arms, seeing a baby girl in the midst, sleeping heavily, unaware her life was in danger. The woman smiled sadly at the baby, and moved the cloths to keep the rain from hitting the child before she continued running. That's when she heard him.
"Bring the Seraphim child back." Came a whisper from the shadows, and the woman began running even faster. She couldn't let them get her hands on her daughter. At least not until she was older and had the magic to protect herself. The child began crying, and the woman began crying as well. She noticed her destination in the distance, and despite how exhausted she was, she kept running until she got to the door. Knowing she had very little time to get the child, her daughter, to safety, she began muttering a spell to make the child's powers hidden until she turned 16. The woman arrived at the building, and banged against the door, looking over her shoulder, terrified. The door opened moments later revealing a kind looking man, and the woman handed the man her child.
"I found this child in some back alley, and didn't know what to do with her." The woman said, and the man looked at her with narrowed eyes, unsure if she was speaking the truth. The woman looked down at the child, and knew she needed to leave, and now.
"I have to go. But there is a name on one of the blankets wrapped around her. It says Kiara. Please, take care of this child. My heart goes out for her, and I only wish she had a chance to live." The woman said quietly, and even though the man didn't believe the woman standing in front of him, he wasn't about to leave a child abandoned. The man looked down at the child, who was awake and staring at him curiously, and he was drawn to the child. He looked back at the woman, and nodded.
"Very well. I will take in this child and raise her as if she were my own." The man said, and the woman felt relieved. Her daughter was finally safe. Without another word, the woman turned and ran from the building, until she was unable to be seen. The child started to cry, and the man looked down at her, closing the door and walked into another room, removing the wet blankets from her. That's when he noticed a small, almost birth-like mark on her arm. He sighed, immediately recognizing the mark, and looked into the child's wide eyes.
"Kiara... what a fitting name for someone who has a dark destiny." The man said quietly, wrapping the child up in some new and much warmer blankets. Kiara cooed, happy, and the man couldn't help but smile. He hoped she would be able to go against the mark, but for right now, his only focus was to raise her well.
