Kylie's POV
"So did you girls have fun?" Mom asks with a cheery smile on her face.
I grin back as I slide into the back seat with Emma. "We had a ton of fun! But we didn't hit everything we wanted to. Can we come back tomorrow?"
Emma's mom glances back at me from the front seat. "Well, your mom and I were going to go see a movie tomorrow afternoon, so we could probably drop you girls off before the movie starts." She looks at my mom for confirmation.
Mom nods and turns her attention to Emma. "So, Emma," she starts. "What did you think?"
She blinks her big hazel-green eyes at her and responds, "It was cool I guess."
Finally my mom's big smile fades slightly. "Well, did you enjoy yourselves?"
Emma shrugs her shoulders and turns her head towards the window. She takes in the scenery while her mom and my mom share a confused look.
They look towards me for an explanation. Emma is never quiet. If she's excited, scared, or mad, she can't keep her mouth shut. She even talks in her sleep! No matter what, she can't keep her mouth shut, which is why it's so weird for her to be silent right now.
I raise an eyebrow and shrug at our mothers. I had no idea why she was quiet. Reading her emotions in her eyes and facial expressions, I decide it was kind of a sad quiet, not a excited, bursting inside quiet. So her silence didn't have to do with the book of drawings.
So why was she holding out on us?
We ride the rest of the way home in complete, awkward silence. Thanks Emma.
As soon as we drive up into the garage of my house, I jump out of the car, pulling Emma behind me. "We'll be in my room!" I shout to my mom.
"Be downstairs at six-thirty for dinner, and about an hour after, we can either go out or stay home for dessert!" she yells back at me.
"Can you make those snickerdoodle cookie cups and fill them with ice cream?"
She smiles and winks at me. "I'll see what I can do."
Her snickerdoodles are already amazing. Mom says her trick is to add butterscotch chips and after they have baked, to drizzle caramel over them. They are so good.
She makes them into little cups by molding the dough around the bottom of a muffin tin. After they have baked in the oven, you just pop them off and voila! Snickerdoodle cookie cups! Then she fills them with plain vanilla ice cream. Yummmmmm!
I drag Emma down the hallway and thrust open the door to my room. I flop down on my bed and pull on my friend's arm to bring her onto my bedspread.
I meet her gaze and pick up a piece of watermelon bubblegum that I keep on my black iron sidetable. I pop it in my mouth, chew it throughly, pucker my lips, push the gum out in a big pink bubble, and snap it. The gum enters my mouth again as I begin to talk to Emma.
"So what's up?" I ask, leaning back against my decorative pillows.
Emma glances up at me. "What do you mean?" she furrows an eyebrow and finally looks up at me.
I give her an annoyed glance. "Really? You were quiet the entire ride home!"
"What's weird about that?" she frowns.
I gape at her.
She puts a finger up in the air before I have a chance to respond. "Ok, I realize that I talk a lot, but it's not that weird to be quiet for a car trip."
I shake my head and sigh. "What's the real reason?"
She bites her lip. "I'm scared."
Well those are two (or is it three) words that I thought I would never hear her say. She always is so secure, so it's weird to hear her utter those words.
I miss my secure, chatty friend.
