All my soldiers and I were wet, cold, and tried. The sky has been crying hard since the second day of our journey to dead man’s land. My soldiers and I have been walking for three days now, 36 hours and 180 minutes. “Darcy, can we rest for a moment please? I don't think I can go much farther. Can't go much further.” Jenna complained. I usually don't acknowledge complaining, but I don't have a choice right now, my soldiers are weak, they need rest. Lots of rest.
“Take a breather everyone,” I looked around for a resting spot,”over there by those trees!” I pointed at the trees. My soldiers went to where I was pointing and set down. Some were laying down, others drinking, most eating. “Alex don't chug down that water like that you’ll get sick again like you did two days ago!” I scolded. He look at me with sorry eyes, something like you would see in a puppy who just got into trouble. “Sorry.” he whispered.
“It's fine, just don't need ya throwing up on everyone.” I said with a small smile. I walked around and checked up on everyone, they really need this break. It was getting late and I figured since we were already comfortable here, we should just set up a small camp here. “Get out your tents and sleeping bags, we’ll camp here for the night,”I paused for a moment,”share a tent with someone so there is not much packing we will have to do tomorrow!” I yelled and started unpacking my tent.
I pulled out the three stakes I need to hold my tent in place and hammered them into the ground. My soldiers do the same. I can't remember the last time we all literally lived inside a house and didn't have to move everywhere on the Earth. Sometimes if I close my eyes I can see a little from the past, before the creatures. Before the mad scientist made the monsters that we fight today. If only he knew what he was costing the world when he made the chemical that made the human body become less human and more like a killing machine.
Is there a cure, I don't know, but were looking. Looking really hard. I finally have my tent up and ready for my sleeping bag. I grab my carrier and pull out my sleeping bag. I look around to check up on my soldiers to see if they were ready for bed, they were already in bed and in a deep slumber , almost a dream like state. I put my sleeping bag inside my tent. I was ready for bed. As I laid down. I slowly drifted off in an uncomfortable slumber, a weird slumber, one where I didn't know if I was awake or asleep.
I found myself holding an bow an arrow, ready to shoot. Something was following me in the woods. I was it's prey, its delighted meal, but I needed to be hunted, and caught. I creeped around a very old oak tree, ready to strike anything that comes near me.
The closer I got back to camp, the more I wanted to run, run as fast as I could and be back in the safety of my tent, surrounded by my soldiers. Why I went out in the first place is beyond my understanding of my mind and its thoughts. I moved again, this time running behind a bush. Only peeking out to see if something is there and yet nothing, absolutely nothing. I was there for a while and nothing came out of hiding.
I slowly came out from my hiding spot, only to be grabbed and my weapon taken and chucked into the air far out of my grasp. I struggled to get out of this creatures grip, but failed to do so. “Let me go! Let me go you creature!” I yelled at it. The creature growled and tightened its grip. “You are going to strangle me if you don't let me go, or maybe that's what you plan on doing is killing me, well buddy you have another thing coming if you think I’m going to let you kill me. Your kind will not win! We will not let you, you evil thing you-let me go!” I yelled and kick and wiggle in attempt to free myself. The creature did nothing, like it was frozen in time, confused it seemed.
I took advantage and bit the creature on its somewhat, human like, skin. In rage, the creature threw me, my back hit against a tree. I screamed in agony, a jolt of pain went up and down my back. My breath had left me and my eyes seemed like they were knocked out of their sockets, my vision was gone. I did the only thing I could think of doing, run.
I ran as fast as my feet would allow me to go. I had to get to camp, so far away camp is from where I was, but I had to try to get there. I can't die, my soldiers need me, my brother needs me. I hit the ground, hard. Now, I can hear nothing but a ding noise. I was done, today was my last day of life. I will not get to see the war end and my people become victorious. I sobbed. I sobbed, not out loud, but more to myself. I was done. I failed my soldiers, my peoples, and the little bit of family I have left, now they will be alone.
I felt the creature lift me up into the air, holding me by my head. I felt the creatures hand tighten, that's how the creature was going to kill me, it was going to pop my head like a pimple. I screamed as a sharp pain ran throughout my head, the top of my skeleton was breaking. I felt something wet roll down my face, blood. My nose was bleeding, the inside of my head was most likely bleeding.
Today I laid on my deathbed. The grim reaper will take my soul. I was done. The creature was so close to killing me and it dropped me. I laid on the cold, naked ground. I could hear nothing. I could see nothing, I could feel nothing. I felt like nothing. All my senses were off, leaving me weak and vulnerable to any creature that wanted me dead.
Something picked me up. No, someone picked me up. “Hey, no need to be so tense sis, it's just me.” I smiled, it was Randy. “Not to be rude, because I appreciate you saving my behind, but how did you know I left camp, how did you find me?” I asked but I was so weak it only came out in a whisper. He looks down at me. “I wasn't asleep. I was warming up by a little fire I made. I seen you leave,” he stopped and looked around and continued walking,” I found you by falling your screaming. I knew you was in trouble.” I nodded. I had nothing to say.
I left camp, put myself soldieuble, almost died, if it wasn't for Randy. My soldiers almost lost their captain. I was stupid to do such a thing as sneaking off on my own. I am reasonable enough to know not to do such a thing, but not wise enough to consider the wrong of my actions.
“So does this mean next time I sneak away from camp. You won't scold me?” And asked. I looked at him and slowly shake my head. “Aw man. Boy's gotta live ya know.” He looked down and smiled. “Boy's also have to stay alive.” I said. “Humph, well played.” he looked straight and was quite the rest of the way to camp.
As soon as my brother and I finally got back to camp, my soldiers were already out of their tents. “Is she okay?” Alex slowly came up to Randy, and examined me. Randy nodded. “Yeah, she’ll be fine,” Randy took in a breath,”She’s a big girl.” he exhaled as he said the statement. “A-are you sure?” Alex asked, the worry starting to show in his voice. “Totally, bro.”
Alex slowly backed away as Randy sat me down. I had enough energy to hold myself up, but still not enough to stand. “Keep your tents out, we’ll be campin’ here again tonight.” I said everyone seemed to have heard me. I feel so bad for my soldiers, we could be on our right now, but I had to screw up.
Randy set down beside me. “Hey, don't beat yourself up over this.” he said, smiling. I looked to the ground. “I jeopardize everything, now we won't get to Dead Man’s Land in time.” I said. “Sis look at me,” I looked at him,”you’re a human, humans aren't always perfect, we mess up sometimes, besides the only one who is mad at you is, well, you.” Randy said. “But-” I was interrupted. “No, shut-up. You are still our leader aren't you, no one is hurt are they?” He asked. “No, okay I see your point now.” I said.
Randy stood up and held out his hand. I took the offer and he helped me up. “Thank you Randy.” I said. He laughed. “No sis, thank you.” he went into his tent. I was puzzled, but walked over to my tent and went to sleep.
