Rather than nurture her and teach her how to love, she told Ferretkit that she was the cause of the problems. Later on, Ferretkit because a warrior. Ferretmask lives in her own kind, thinking that because she's not her mother, she's always right and good. In reality, she's more like her mother than she is not, trying to manipulate cats and make herself the hero. She wants a mate and kits so she can give them the "love" that she was never given.
