"I hate you, you know that right?" Hailey joked with a smile. "Of course, m'lady. The honor is mine!" Lucas laughed, receiving a light punch on his arm. Pretending to be in dire need of help, he dramatically fell and yelled, "No! My arm! The AGONY!" She sighed and said, "Fine, I'll kiss it better." Lucas then received a light kiss on his arm, calming him down. "Oh thank you kind maiden. This act of kindness will be greatly appreciated." "Oh shut up! Let's just go downstairs for dinner, you're so annoying." She said with a flushed face.
They went downstairs to see her mother with four plates ready for lunch. As Ethan walked in to take his seat, Lucas remembered a painful truth, why am I still trying this. She has a boyfriend, goddammit! Let's just enjoy lunch I guess...
"Hey Lucas! I, uhhh, need to ask for a favor. Alone. In private. Ok?" Ethan asked, very awkwardly. "Sure?" Lucas let out before being pulled into the living room.
Ethan cautiously looked around the room before reaching into his pocket, pulling out a little box. Lucas' eyes widened as he realized what he had. "You-You're going to propose?" Lucas asked, a painful knot developing in his throat. Ethan quickly nodded, radiating happiness. Lucas asked, tears threatening to escape at any moment, "What do you want me to do?" "Play music on your guitar in the background. I need you man, please." Ethan begged, it was clear he wanted this more than he has ever wanted anything. All Lucas could muster up without breaking out into tears was a barely audible okay.
As they walked back into the kitchen, Lucas sat on the stairs near the table and grabbed his guitar while playing Beautiful in White. Ethan sang the lyrics then he got on one knee, pulled out the ring, and asked those four words.
"My baby, will you marry me?"
"Yes!"
As they were all focused on the ring, nobody noticed Lucas, and how he bursted in tears, slowly walked upstairs, and cried himself to sleep in the guest bedroom. Nobody noticed his heart breaking more and more each note he played, each word that was sung, and each breath she took before saying yes. Nobody noticed the tear stained cheeks the next day. Nobody saw how broken he was. Nobody cared. Ethan didn't notice the pain in Lucas' voice, either, when he asked for Lucas to be his man of honor. He didn't see the tear fall as he turned his back. Nobody did.
