Lavender's POV
An endless corridor. I kept running, but I could never see the end. It was silent. Terrifyingly silent. The only sound was my shoes running down the never-ending corridor. Suddenly, there was a noise behind me. I spun round, only to see nothing. Then there was a screech further down the corridor. I spun around and ran towards the sound. Something knocked me backwards sending me flying back the way I came. I screamed...
I woke up screaming. The door in my room burst open and the lights went on. Both my parents came to my bedside, trying to calm me down. Sweat was pouring down my face. My mum sat down on the bed next to me.
"It's ok, honey," she said reassuringly, stroking my hair, "everything's ok."
Both me and my parents were shocked. I hadn't had nightmares like these since I was 8. That's a whole 4 years ago. I had to go to therapy for it and it wasn't nice therapy either. I hated it and I didn't ever want to go back. Dr. Davidoff was evil, but only Derek believed me when I told him this. He had also gone through therapy, when his little sister, Selena, had died. He had had a mental breakdown, so he had to take special pills. He got better very quickly though and got out soon, unlike me. I spent a whole year in therapy.
"Maybe we should take you to Dr. Davidoff, he'll be able to help," Dad suggested.
"No! Never! I will never go back there. It's horrible. You can't make me go back to him," I shouted at my father. No one understood me. They were always telling me how Dr. Davidoff would make everything better, but I refused to go any where near him.
"But he'll make you better, honey" my mother told me, "that's all we want." She saw my determined expression and sighed. "Fine, we'll give you a week. If you have anymore nightmares this week we'll take you to Dr. Davidoff. Agreed?"
"Fine" I mumbled, reluctantly.
Mum gave me a quick peck on the cheek and a tight squeeze and walked over to the door. Dad came over and ruffled my hair and they both left.
I looked at my bedside clock. It said 5:00. I decided to get in the shower. It was very refreshing. I got into a plain T-shirt and shorts after that. Then, I opened the window and took a deep breath of the beautiful smell of pine needles and wildlife. I felt energy rush through my veins. I looked down at the ground, 2 storeys below and took another deep breath. I wasn't really supposed to go into the forest, because, apparently, it was "dangerous". I completely disagreed. The forest was more my home than the house. I didn't know why. The 2 storey jump might faze some people, especially people who were scared of heights, but for me it just got the adrenaline going. I loved it. I took one more deep breath, and jumped. I landed softly on the freshly cut grass. I picked a handful of grass and threw it over myself. It felt even more refreshing than the shower. I grabbed my dagger from underneath the door mat and flew off into the forest. Most people think daggers are old fashioned and that nobody likes to use them, but a dagger is my best weapon, along with a bow and arrows. I never tell anyone about my trips into the forest, except Derek. I tell everything to Derek. We have been best friends ever since I first came to Vancouver Island, which was when I was 6. He doesn't always like it when I go into the forest on my own with a dagger. He thinks it's dangerous for a 12 year old to be carrying a dagger, but wouldn't it be more dangerous if I didn't? I didn't always take the bow and arrows anyway. I only used those when I needed to.
__________At Derek's house 4 years later__________
"Derek, get down here right now!" I could hear my mother shouting at me from downstairs. I groaned and slumped out of bed. I walked lazily to the bathroom and splashed myself with freezing cold water because I couldn't be bothered having a shower. I went into the bedroom and looked at my bedside clock. It said 8:20. I jumped up. School started in 10 minutes and I had to pick Lavender up as well. I grabbed some clothes and shoved them on, then ran down the stairs 2 at a time. I said good morning to my mum, gulped down some orange juice, grabbed a piece of toast and flew out of the house.
I found her sitting on her porch with Fitz (her cat) on her lap. When she saw me, her face lit up and she jumped into the car.
"You took your time this morning," she said, looking at me accusingly.
"What? I forgot to set my alarm again, that's all," I told her innocently. We both burst out laughing. I looked at her poperly for the first time that morning and I noticed her windswept hair.
"You been in the forest again?" I asked her. She grinned.
"Yeah. I caught a couple of deer as well," she told me excitedly. I loved it when she talked about her hunting, because it was one of the things that really made her smile. She loved it even more when we did it together after school. I wasn't really very good at the hunting part but I could almost run as fast as her and I could tell when good prey was coming for her to hunt down, but I enjoyed it because I got to spend time with my best friend. She looked at me and grinned. I smiled back at her and gasped. With the morning light lighting up her perfect features, she was absolutely beautiful. Her smile made my heart pound. I suddenly realised why all the boys at school were always falling head over heels for her. Not that I would do anything like that, because she was just my best friend and that's all we'd ever be, as she already had a boyfriend and they were most definitely in love with each other.
There was a jolt as the car swerved and the smile on Lavender's face was replaced by terror. I quickly woke up from my day dream and pulled the car back to the right side of the road. There was a honk from a person driving the other way.
"Keep your eyes on the road will you Derek?" Lavender's heavy breathing told me that I had scared the wits out of her. Something told me she would be walking home after school.
"Sorry Lav. Don't worry, everything's fine," I assured her. She calmed down a little.
"Don't ever do that again," she scolded me.
"Sorry, just please don't tell my mum or she'll kill me," I said anxiously. She nodded and looked out the window. Her hands were trembling. I started to panic a bit. Usually she wasn't this scared over something so little. She would normally get over it very quickly. Then I realised what had happened. I reached over and squeezed her hand, keeping my eyes on the road. I risked a glance down at her when the road was empty. She was looking up at me, her eyes glistening with tears. I immediately pulled over. I knew we were going to be late for school, but I didn't care. I turned off the engine and lifted Lavender onto my knee. She didn't hesitate at all. She buried her head in my chest and sobbed her heart out. I held her and soothed her and eventually she had cried herself dry. She just sat there and cuddled me. None of us moved until she felt ready and moved over to the passenger seat again. We kept our hands linked though. I started the engine back up and drove over to school. None of us said a word for the rest of the journey...
