An hour later, the family from the house had been looked over by paramedics and given time to calm down while Mikayla, Joeland the two constables gave reports to officers who arrived to take over investigating the scene. Mikayla joined the family where they waited besides an ambulance, still huddled together with expressions of wide eyed shock.
"Hey there," Mikayla said, taking out her phone to make notes, "I'm Sergeant Wallis. How are you all feeling now? Do you think I could ask you some questions about what happened before we got here?"
The man stepped forward, placing himself between Mikayla and his family. He shook his head, scrunching up his face in an effort to form thought.
"It was all kinds of crazy," the man said, "I don't know what we can really tell you."
Mikayla gave a small smile. "How about we start with you name?"
"Uh, Bill," the man answered, "Geoff Dermot."
"Okay. Can you remember what you were doing before your house was broken into?"
"I was getting ready for work," The man said, "My wife has the day off. The kids have been sick with a stomach bug. This was supposed to be their last day off."
"So it was just regular morning?" Bill nodded. "Please continue"
"It was fine to begin with. The wife was giving the kids their medicine and I was putting some laundry on. I don't know when it got in. It was just there and the kids were screaming. We threw whatever we had nearby and ran. It chased us through the house. It... It kept getting in the way of the doors. Wouldn't let us leave. We managed to get the kids in the bedroom. We could hear it scratching at the door but then you guys showed up. It was just crazy."
"I see," Mikayla said, "Thank you for talking to me. Take care of you family."
Mikayla left the family and joined Joel near the curb where they watched Dominic pacing angrily in the middle of the road, now dressed and spitting sulphurous curses at anyone who approached. It was only the assurances of Mikayla that saved him from being arrested. When they were done, the two detectives went to speak to their rescuer.
When they came close, Dominic stopped, took a mighty breath and calmed himself with a visible effort. "Sorry," he said politely, "I didn't expect things to go so pear-shaped here. I... I'm sorry for losing my temper. Are you all okay?"
"We'll live," Mikayl said, "Thanks to you, probably."
Dominic looked pointedly at Joel's head where a lump was visibly forming under his stubbled hair. "If you say so but you should probably go to the hospital anyway. You tell your friends in blue what you saw in there?"
Mikayla and Joel shared a look. "We're not sure what we saw," Joel said, "We thought we should get all the facts before making a more detailed report."
"Joel and I have body cams though," Mikayla said, "We have to turn those in as soon as we get back to office."
"Great," Dominic said sarcastically with a frown, "I was really hoping I could convince you this was all a dream."
"Little late for that," Mikayla said dryly, "And what the hell was that thing? Because that was real. That wasn't a trick or a guy in a suit, that was... that was real. Not even the first monster we've seen this week"
"That was Gary Worth," Dominic said, "I think you got there on your own though. He's... sick. Really sick which is why you should make sure he didn't bleed on you. I'm not sure that's how it's transmitted but better safe than sorry. It's also why I doubt those bullets are going to slow him down for more than a day or so. I know about yesterday, by the way. Think you'll believe that's a dream as well?"
