Victoria is a fifteen year old girl who really has a hard life. Afterall, when a mother with a drinking problem and a father who.....just isn't very good at being an adult, try to be together and raise a family, you'd think that there would be enough signs that the relationship just wouldn't work out. Well, apparently not.
When Victoria's mother, Christina, left the young father, Axel, with two kids to take care of by himself, life went way downhill for Victoria and what was left of her family. She had just turned fifteen when her parents split, and she believed that nothing would ever get better. And she for sure thought that it definitely couldn't get any worse.
She was wrong.

Exactly three after Christina abandoned everything she had created, after an exhausting day of shopping for their father, Victoria and Max, Max being Victoria's younger brother by three years, where walking home with six bags of groceries in their hands. Max was drumming on the neighbors' fences, singing the annoying song that Victoria absolutely hated.
"Mommy shark doo doo doo doo doo doo! Mommy shark doo doo doo doo doo doo! Mommy shark doo doo doo doo doo doo. Mommy shark! Daddy shark doo doo-"
"Shush."
Max continued singing.
Victoria repeated, "Shush."
"Lighten up doo doo doo doo doo doo. Lighten up doo doo doo doo doo doo. Lighten UP."
"SHUSH!" They were almost back to their house, and all that Victoria wanted to do was go to her room and eat ice cream.
See, this was why she hated puberty.
It's not my fault, Victoria thought to herself as she walked in silence. It's mom's. Ever since Christina had left, Victoria wasn't anything like how she used to be. She hadn't gone anywhere fun in almost the entire summer break from school, and she hadn't talked to any of her friends. Now the new school year was coming at her way too fast, and all she wanted to do was stay in her room, moan, and punch her stupid, immature brother in his stupid, immature face. She'd gotten over 100 calls from her school's guidance counselor asking if she needed to talk to someone. Victoria's reply was always no.
She began to jog ahead of Max, mumbling curses that she really wanted to say to her mom's face.
She arrived at the house a few minutes later, grocery bags still in her hands. She stood in the doorway for a moment, looking around her at the scratched up wood flooring, old brown couch, and wood-burning fireplace that hadn't been used in years. She kicked off her beat-up army boots and brought the food into the kitchen.
What she saw would have made other people gasp in shock, but Victoria just took it in. There was always a giant pile of dirty glasses in the sink, and the spilt milk that no one had ever bothered to clean up, but today everything looked extra.....old.
Victoria started to stuff the groceries into their ancient fridge when she heard the front door squeak open. She looked behind her, expecting to see Max walk in. She was surprised to see her father instead, still wearing his San Diego Foundation Inspector's uniform. He was talking intently on his phone, and he didn't even notice Victoria standing in the kitchen with the fridge open. She heard him talking quieter than usual, and she moved in closer to listen.
"Yeah, I know I said that I could" he was mumbling, "But you have to understand, I-"
An angry voice came from the other end of the line.
"Hey, hey!" Axel was now shouting at the other person. "I can make it next week, I just need..." His voice drifted off, and Victoria realized that her father had seen her.
"I have to go. No, no, I have to go now. Yeah, sure, whatever." He hung up, the angry voice still yelling over the phone . "Hey, Vic." He frowned. "Where's your brother?" That was it. No How are you doing?, no Have a fun day?, no Thank you so much for slaving away all day doing the responsibilities that I was supposed to do.
Victoria shrugged in response. Axel nodded calmly and went up the stairs, dropping his work bag on the floor as he went by.
Max walked in the door, still singing random songs from the radio.
"Put the food in the fridge." Victoria headed for her room next to the stairs
