Panic was in the air. Everyone was tense with the big news. People were immigrating to Canada just to avoid their children being taken away.

The year was 3000. World War III was rising, and the USA had to take extreme measures.

"Due to their being a lack of fighters, we will be taking some of your children to be tested on and used as weapons, we will only take the 3rd children and above, so you will still have two of your children to keep you company. "

Those same words echoed in Mindy's mind as she hurried down the streets of Maine.

Mindy Laurence, 18, and a third child, was scared and alone. She had just heard the president over the TV's in the store windows talk about getting rid of her and sending her to a factory at least 100 miles away.

She came upon the big, brass door as she knocked and waited for an answer. Not long after, a small hello was whispered through the peep in the door.

"Em, its me. We need to talk." The crack in the door gradually got wider as a slim, petite girl was in the walkway. Her dirty blond hair was pulled back into two dutch braids, round glasses hung loosely on her nose, and she was only wearing a old pair of Christmas sweats and a fuzzy white sweater.

"I'm guessing you heard the news, hu." Emma said as if it weren't a big deal. Before Mindy could process anything, her arms swung around Em, and they were both pulled into a big bear hug.

Emma's hands wrapped around Mindy's waist, as a soft smile curved around her lips. Their body heat merged together, and even though they weren't lovers, they sure had looked like it.

"Here, come inside," Emma offered as Mindy walked inside of the big, white house. Unlike Mindy, Emma was a single child. Mindy's family were farmers, and very poor, and Emma's family were always the ones to lend them money whenever they were in dept.

Emma pulled out a jar of cookies and poured two glasses of milk for them. Mindy sat down in a tan, silk chair with dark wood handles and a big screen TV hanging on a tall wall.

"Soooo... what are you going to do?" Emma asked with innocence. "I guess ill have to go to a factory and leave everyone behind." Mindy replied with sadness in her voice.

Emma's jaw dropped.

"What do you mean your just gonna go to this factory?! Wheres the Mindy who wouldn't say no to anything! Emma replied, angered and shocked at the same time. "I don't think you understand Em! I cant just say I don't want to go to a factory and they would let me be free!"

"I know you have to go, but the Mindy I know would never let them take her alive."
