Mindy's cheeks were red from the arctic climate. Her hands were sweaty and she couldn't help but be anxious."Mindy? Mindy? Mindy, are you okay? Mindy?" Mrs. Laurence's soft words brought Mindy back to earth. "Yes... yeah whats up." Mindy said, still delusional. Mrs. Laurence started to tear up. A single tear rolled down her pink cheeks. "I... i just cant believe whats happening," she said with sorrow and worry. "Its just, they don't know how painful it is for my own child to be taken away from me...." she wiped the tears from her eyes as she looked at Mindy and smiled. It wasn't the type of smile you get from being happy, its a forced kind of smile, the one that hurts you the most.
"Its just until the war is over, then I'll come back. Promise." Mindy said, holding out her pinkie, waiting for Mrs. Laurence to accept her promise. Mrs. Laurence reluctantly intertwined her pinkie with Mindy's. They both shared a small, simple smile, that expressed over a thousand words.
"Calling all passengers between number 360-400 to please come to role call!" the speakers deep voiced boomed over the megaphone.
Mindy wished her mom and her brothers away as she walked to the train that would carry her over 300 miles away. She kissed her family away one more time and climbed onto the train.
"MINDYYYYYY!!!!!
Over the mushed voices, steam of the trains, Em's voice shouted longingly for her best friend. Even though this was a family only event, and you needed an I.D. to get in, Emily had snuck in just to say goodbye.
Before Em was rushed away by police men, Mindy ran as fast as her legs could take her, and clung to Em as if her life depended on it. It felt like hours each others arms, even though it was more like seconds.
The last thing Em had ever told Mindy, was..
"I love you,"
