Once I had stopped laughing at Ty, I turned and walked to join Laury in our cabin. The moment I was walking up the steps of the deck Laury popped out of the door to interrogate me.
“Where were you? What happened? What did you say to Derek? Was he being an ass again? Are you okay? I mean I can’t believe he said that in front of the whole camp.” Once she stopped asking me questions, I just stood there and chuckled.
“I’m fine, Laury,” I told her.
She gasped. “Holy crap. You need to tell me what happened right now!”
“Can’t I tell you later?”
“No! A: This is a big deal. I mean, you can’t just see him and talk to him and not let me know what happened. And B: You haven’t smiled this much since… you know… before.” As she said the ‘before’ part she looked around side to side to see if anybody would overhear. I’m so lucky to have a best friend like her.
“Okay, you got me there. But still, can we please just talk about this later so that we can meet our cabin mates,” I begged her. I knew that once I talked to her I would cry again about seeing Derek, but this time it wouldn’t just be a couple of tears. It would be full out waterworks.
I think Laury understood that, though, because she nodded and said, “Okay. In the meantime, I’ll introduce you to the people that I talked to when you were gone.” I nodded my head and we walked into the cabin. I went straight to my bed, the top bunk in the corner on the right hand side of the cabin. I laid down on my bed, once I moved my suitcase off it and tucked it in the corner. Then I put my hands over my eyes to attempt to prevent the headache I knew I was going to get.
