Professor Alistair left and it was just me and her. I looked at the small girl before me and did my best to analyze her while I had a moment. She could just be an abnormally tall and developed eleven year old... but even in a world full of magic that's a stretch. She had a small frame, long wavy hair that went down till her middle back. Her grey-blue eyes showed nothing but confusion and wonder. Freckles were dusted on her face and she had a cute little button nose.
She didn't look abnormal, but her case was. Why was a thirteen-year-old just now getting sorted at Ilvermorny. What kind of magical mix up is this?
"Why are you staring at me like that?" She asked me, causing me to stop my mental rant.
"Oh sorry, I was just trying to..." I hesitated because I didn't want to seem rude. Though I wasn't one for a lot of social interaction, I did want some kind of friend at least. I gushed these feelings to Professor Alistor during one of our lunch meetings last year. It was before the sorting ceremony, that he told me there was a chance I could make a new friend who didn't know anything about me, so it would be a fresh start. Which is something I needed and I thanked him for the opportunity. Especially now that she had a mystery tied to her.
"Trying to figure out why I'm not eleven?" She asked me deflating into herself a bit. She crossed her arms across her chest and looked at the ground. Now I felt bad.
"I mean you are a peculiar case, so yeah basically." I said being kind of blunt. Honesty is the best policy right? She looked up at me and nodded giving me the expression that read 'fair'. She smiled at me and held out her hand.
"Stevie Evans, an oddity." She laughed to herself. I reached out my hand and took her small one in mine.
"Andrew Caspian, a boy with many queries." I laughed back, enjoying the fun exchange of introductions. We took back our hands and Stevie stepped toward me.
"So where to now?" She asked.
I then remembered why Professor Alistair asked me here. "Oh right! I'm supposed to take you to the wand hall with the other first years. That' where you get your wand. Hence why it's it's called the wand hall." I said.
"Why didn't I go there first?" She asked me.
"Not, sure. Could have been all the attention you were getting, you looked rather uncomfortable up there, with everyone watching. He probably pulled you away to give you a break."I said, thinking about Professor Alistair and his most common motives. He is a pretty simple guy to figure out when you spent an entire year hanging out with him. He always has the student's best interest in mind. I can tell making others happy, relieves his stress. He once told me, that the joy of others and their comfort is what makes the hard work worth it. Sometimes I feel like he is too nice, but thats Headmaster Alistair for you.
"Not much of a break if he spent most of the time questioning me," She said starting to walk forward.
"I guess it's the hypothetical thought that counts, "I said causing Stevie to laugh. We started walking in step as I lead her to the wand hall.
I remember when I first got my wand. It was five years ago. The prefects were going around and giving students wands to try meanwhile I took matters into my own hands and picked one out for myself. The first box I saw was neatly tucked away, and it was at the top of one of the shelves, why I chose to grab the one that was hardest to reach, is beyond me. I walked up to the ladder against the wall and rolled it towards my desired wand. The prefects weren't really paying me much attention so I climbed up and grabbed it.
The moment I pulled it out and gave it a wave, was the moment my annoying reputation began. I waved my wand and I caused a large burst of wind to admit from it, knocking kids over and scattering wand boxes everywhere. I fell to the ground and when I looked up it was then that all eyes landed on me. As if I wasn't embarrassed enough, I heard one kid call out "way to go fag!" and that definitely broke me. I ended up running out of the room from embarrassment and fear. I still had the wand in my possession, so I had to go return it because it wasn't the one meant for me. It was late in the evening when everyone was eating did I go return it.
When I got there I wasn't alone, another boy wandered around the room looking at wands. He was rather short, had poofy black hair and pale white skin. He was really cute. I said hi to him but he just looked at me then looked away and I knew then to just leave him alone. We found our wands in silence, him before me, and we never spoke again. That boy, S.T was a mystery to everyone to this day.
"-drew? Andrew?" I was taken out of my thoughts by Stevie tapping my arm and calling out my name. "Hey, where did you go?" She asked.
"Sorry, got lost in my train of thought. What's up?"
"How will I know which wand is mine? Do I just choose one and that's it?" she asked me. She was obviously born from a family of No-Majes because her knowledge on magic was almost non existent.
"Well the wand chooses the wizard. Yeah it might take you a couple tries to find the right one, but because it's fated to be yours you'll find it for sure." I said repeating what the prefects once said to me. Stevie nodded, though looking skeptical, and kept walking. We reached the hall of wands to see there were still first years getting their wands. Not many, but a good bunch.
A few kids turned their head, seeing new movement in the room and some of their gazes lingered recognizing Stevie.
I wanted to keep their gazes away so I made us keep moving until Stevie stopped abruptly, causing me to bump into her. "Stevie what's up?" I asked her.
"That wand," she pointed towards the wand in a young boy's hand. "That's the one." she said. I paused for a moment.
"Stevie, you haven't ever held it..." I said cautiously.
"Then let me hold it." she said in a tone that sounded so matter-O-factly. I hesitantly nodded and walked over to the boy holding the wand, he gave it back to the prefect, I recognized as Jessica Olman.
"Jessica," I called over to her, she looked up at me and looked around. As if I was referring to someone else. Classic. I walked up to her and we made eye contact.
"Oh Andrew, what are you doing here?" she asked.
"I'm helping out Stevie Evans... the thirteen year old." I stated eyeing the wand, "and I was wondering, if I could have that wand?" I asked pointing at the box in her hand.
"Ummm, yeah sure I guess," she handed it to me and I gave her an appreciative smiled, "just make sure to give it back when it doesn't work." she said before turning back to the other peers in her house.
I paused for a moment, she didn't even say 'if' she said 'when'. I turned around and started walking away, "Bitch." I muttered.
I found Stevie, right where I left here, where she was examining the architecture of the building. She seemed liked a very curious observer, and I liked that. "The wand you requested," I removed it from the box and handed it to her. It was a what looked to be a redwood wand and the shape suggested a unicorn hair core. There were small star shaped carving the wend down stopping just before the wand's tip.
Stevie took the wand and held it in her hand. It seemed to fit perfectly in her hands, and a small mist swirled around her. Extraordinary. It was her wand.
"How did you know this was the one?" I asked her with with disbelief.
"I don't know I just had a feeling, and like you said, the wand chooses the wizard." She shrugged, "Now where do we go?" she asked.
"Right now we should be heading to the dining hall, that's where you'll sit with your house." I smiled at her.
"Are you in my house?" she asked me looking hopeful.
"You're a pukwudgie if I remember right?" she nodded, "then unfortunately not, I'm a Horned Serpent, so i guess this is where we part. I said as we neared the dining hall.
We paused at the entrance and Stevie turned and gave me a hug, catching me off guard. "Thank you for helping me out, even if it was a short while I think you're pretty cool, I'll see you in a class?" she said hopeful glimmer returning in her eyes.
"Not really, third years and fifth years have different classes, but outside of class definitely." I smiled at her. Something about Stevie was different. She was odd, but in an endearing way. I'm definitely looking forward to being friends with her.
