I walked down the aisle keeping my eyes locked on Merry. I was bummed out that I couldn't spend more time with Andrew, he was really nice and he didn't judge me too much. He did look like he had questions. Questions I couldn't answer myself. Was this what my year was going to be? Full of questions, that no one can seem to answer? Or was it going to get better?
I walked up behind Merry and tapped his shoulder. He turned to me and smiled "Stevie you're back!" he scooted over and patted the seat next to him. "Oh shoot, we need to get your wand?" he said starting to stand up as I sat down.
"No need, I found it." I said holding it up to show him. I didn't exactly have any robes to store it in, so I just held it at my side. I was just wearing the standard blue button up shirt, navy blue vest with the Gordian Knot on the right corner. I didn't really like the blue and red plaid skirt I had to wear, because I hate skirts, and the tights I had to wear underneath made it even worse. The black shoes were okay, at least they were comfy.
"Who took you?" Merry asked me. He took the wand in my hand and started to examine it. He nodded his head and handed it back to me. I took it back and placed it next to me.
"Andrew Caspian." I replied grabbing food and putting it on the plate in front of me. I don't exactly remember it being there, but I've stopped questioning things at this point, because magic.
"Andrew Caspian, huh?" He said in a quizzical tone. I turned to him and saw that he was thinking.
"What's wrong with him?" I asked feeling ready to defend. I may not have known him long, but he seemed like a nice person.
"There are just rumors about him, I wouldn't want you to get caught up in that stuff." Merry waved me off and started diggin into his food.
"What kind of rumors?" I ask my curiosity showing a bit. Merry glanced around before leaning towards me.
"Rumors that he is gay... and stuff." Merry said he leaned away and once again tried to return to his food.
"What? What's wrong with that?" I said getting upset. I tugged at his sleeve in an aggressive manner and Merry sighed.
"No, I'm not saying it's because he is gay... well it kind of is, but people say that he does things..." Merry said, seeming getting uncomfortable.
"What kind of things?" I asked.
"Honestly, I don't believe what they say, but gossip kids are brutal, and I don't want you getting in some trouble because you hang out with the wrong people." He said hurriedly.
"But, what do they say he does?" I pushed further.
"Things... Stevie, I'm not comfortable talking about this." Merry quickly snapped at me. He paused and started to rub the area of his right collar bone. He looked in pain. His breathing became heavy and he closed his eyes.
"Merry? Are you okay?" I asked placing my hand on his shoulder but he shrugged it off.
"M'fine, I just need a moment." He mumbled, standing up Merry hurriedly walked out of the dining hall. I sat there in awe at what just happened.
"It happens to him a lot." Someone said. I turned to my right and saw a boy sitting across from me giving me a sympathetic look. He looked to be a little bit younger than me, possibly a second year. He had short, slightly tamed, brown hair, and big square glasses. He stared at me with these piercing blue eyes. It felt like they saw through me.
"He does?" I asked, feeling concerned for Merry. The boy nodded.
"None of know why, but it typically happens when he gets angry or upset in any way." He said shrugging.
Instantly I felt guilty because I had upset him. I shrunk into myself and sadly reached for my spoon. "But it wasn't your fault really-" the boy said quickly, noticing my obvious guilt. "Merry, doesn't like it when people spread rumors about others, also you were talking about Andrew Caspian and the rumors around that kid are disturbing. So much that I'm surprised anyone would believe them. Honestly leave it to the homophobes to ruin a kid's life." He said rolling his eyes at the last sentence. "I think it's best you don't know, and if you really want to it's not my place to tell you. That's Andrew's. If he wants to that is." He smiled at me.
"I nodded in agreement, he had a point. "What's your name?" I asked.
"My name is Davis Turner, and you're Stevie Evans." Davis smiled at me. My eyes widen at the fact he knew my name, but then I remembered how it was announce to the whole school when I got sorted. Obviously I, out of anyone would stand out.
I held out my hand and he took it. "Wow, you have dry hands." He said bluntly. I retracted my hand and pouted at him.
"Rude." I said. "If anything your hands are too sweaty, so take that you swamp monster." I glared at him.
"Sw-swamp monster?" he laughed, staring at me with an amused expression.
"Yes, you feel like what I'd imagine a swamp monster feelings like." I said giving a smile. Davis chuckled at that.
"Well, I'm sorry for being a nervous person." He rolled his eyes and held his hands up in defense. He looked up and his smile faded a bit. I turned around to see Merry had returned. His eyes were red and glossy, like he was holding back tears.
"Davis, I see you and Stevie are getting along. He smiled.
"I mean you could say that, if her calling me a swamp monster is getting along." Davis glared at me causing me to smile.
"Well you are." I said plainly.
Merry turned to me, "I leave you for two minutes and you're harassing other students." Merry smiled fondly at me all the pain in his features gone. "For shame Stevie."
Merry got settled next to me again and I started eating my food, which was surprisingly still warm. Magic I tell you. I took a bite and It was really good. Typically school food is really bad, but this was amazing. "I freakin love magic!" I groaned aloud stuffing my face with mashed potatoes. Merry and Davis both laughed and dug into their food as well.
