i am about to go to bed when i get a text from david. it's 3am what could he possibly want?

can you come over? i need you.

what the hell does that even mean? i've liked david for a while now but i could never be with him because hes dating liza, though they've been a little distant lately. he's probably wasted or something. i shoot back a reply

David

no.

i rush around my house, thinking something is wrong, grabbing my keys and my bag and go into my car. i speed over to his house and as soon as i get there alex opens the door and i run inside to his room, not paying attention to the questioning looks i get from alex and everyone else. once i get to the door i knock softly and enter to see david curled on the bed, blankets and pillows surrounding him. as i enter the room he looks up and motions for me to sit. i do.

"what's wrong? your message sounded like you were hurt or something."

"i am"

"are you sick?"

"no"

"david, what's wrong"

"she left" it hits me who he's talking about. he and liza must've broken up.

"what?"

"liza, she- she broke up with me." tears stream from his face as he says her name. he's broken.

"dave, oh my god." i say and i gently hug him.

"i need you. please stay." he says and i nod. david and i have always been close so "cuddling" really isn't out of the norm for he and i. he scoots over and i lay next to him, wrapping my arms around his torso comfortingly. my heart skips as he does the same.

"you're my best friend and i don't know what i'd do without you." he says as i feel him drifting off to sleep. he will never know how much i want to be something more.
