Chapter Four & Five:

I had been attending New Hillcrest's equestrian-university for nearly a year and a half at this point. My riding skills improved dramatically and my knowledge for all classes I took part in (like psychology) was increasing every day! So that put me closer to one day becoming an official advanced rider, trainer, caretaker, and owner for equids; and eventually earning a degree in particular subjects. Plus around this time-period, I helped my parents move to Jorvik and into a lovely home at Firgrove (a woodland escape in Silverglade, that has a viking-style village and is known for intense cross-country competitions), so I could visit them whenever I wanted. Especially when riding Ginger to Mistfall National Park, of course. I mean, that forest is literally right next to Firgrove!

But on this particular day, I wasn't riding Ginger to a forest. Instead, we were actually going to ride to our New Hillcrest property, because I had just finished a day at university. I had spent hours on this specific Friday practising my pleasure riding skills and studying for physiology. And clearly, if I have a horse, why walk or drive to or from school, when I can just ride (especially when I could usually- when I didn't have to ride lesson-equids- include my equids in classes to learn new skills)? However, my plan of going home quickly changed when I started to feel instincts, the second I mounted Ginger. And those very instincts encouraged me to head over to Crescent Moon Village (a cozy area in Epona, known for its humble people, patient riders, clear lake, fresh streams, breezy forest, and wonderful equine rescue-center). Therefore, I took that cue from Aideen and rode away to the content place that I've always loved to visit, ever since I settled into Epona...

Once I arrived at the rescue-center, I dismounted Ginger, patted his shoulder, and walked inside the building. Making me immediately be greeted by the manager of the center, who was sitting at the office desk. Then, I wandered through doors and off to where I knew I had to be at: the stalls of the rescue center, where any equids for adoption would be held. And just like expected, when I walked into the stall area, I saw what I had been looking for... horses.

Each one of them was standing in a rustic stall, napping or eating forage. But for a moment, instead of me feeling happy to be where Aideen guided me, I was confused. I had just begun to feel a soul-connection, yet it kind of pointed in all directions, causing me to feel lost. However, a chestnut gelding with white markings in one of the stalls neighed at me, signaling for my attention. Therefore, I assumed the magnetic-like attraction that I felt was only for him. I felt a soul-connection to him, anyway. So I strolled over to his stall as I said with a smile, "Hey boy!"

The chestnut gelding huffed excitedly at my voice, his ears and posture up high in alertness, "Hi. I'm Charm."

He had a young voice that was playful.

I stood by Charm's stall door and reached my hands up to his face. I started to pet him once I spoke, "I'm Avon... I'm sure you know about me."

"Mhm." The gelding nodded his head to an extent that proved that he was restless from being in his stall, "Aideen has told me. I just never knew what you looked like. I never even thought that I'd ever feel a soul-connection to you... I honestly believed I'd just be another failed racehorse."

My eyes widened, stunned, "What? Oh, that's terrible! I know of all of the abuse that goes on towards racehorses. It's sick. Did you really have to suffer with that?"

"It is sick. I dealt with just the tip of it though." Charm shook his head, calming down but now sounding a little upset, "I came from a breeding farm for thoroughbreds. Nobody cared for me there. I would be whipped and metal would be shoved in my mouth. Everyone was rough with me. I was going to be used as a racehorse and that scared me. The breeding farm I was at got shut down though due to being charged for animal-abuse. Not for racing, of course. But because one of the horse-handlers got caught beating a stud up, jockeys were violently whipping thoroughbreds, and a lot of the horses showed signs of fear. I'm glad it got shut down, regardless of the reason though. I mean, it shut down only days before my training was going to start. And it's obvious that I'm too young for that. So I'm fine and gelded now. Other thoroughbreds have experienced worse though."
