Prologue: Dominika
Tears ran down her face as she screamed for him to stop. But she knew that he wouldn't. It was all her fault that he was like this. She shouldn't have told him about the baby. It was all her fault that she hung around him instead of listening to her parents and focusing on ballet.
She didn't remember what she said to tick him off but he was like a time bomb waiting to explode everyday. The sound of the belt whipping against her fair skin echoed in her ears and she stopped screaming.
Their daughter was listening from her bedroom. She was hoping to God that Jane wouldn't go out of her room and yell at Vlad to stop hitting her. Jane was just like him, so strong willed and aggressive.
The pain subsided as he threw down his belt in a drunken haze. He stormed out the door and she was left there with bruises and cuts. Normally she would have freaked out but by now she was used to it.
She tucked her brown hair behind her ear and went to the bathroom to tend to her wounds. She tried not to look into the mirror but her eyes caught her reflection and she bit her lip as she hastily looked back down at the stained water.
There were times when she wanted to go back to Russia. Sometimes when she thought about it, it made her heart ache. But she always had to remember that she couldn't. She didn't have enough money and she just couldn't leave Jane. Plus, she still loved Vlad, she couldn't leave without him.
"Mama?" a quiet voice asked. She turned around and she saw her little girl timidly standing by the doorway of the small bathroom. "Are you okay?"
Dominika forced a smile and nodded. "Of course I'm okay," Domi said quietly. "Mama is always okay."
The look Jane gave her mother didn't buy it though. Dominika looked back at the mirror and thought about how much make up she would have to put on to hide the scars. Most of her money that she spent on herself was on make up.
"Do you need to be tucked in?" she asked, forcing herself to brighten up her mood. Jane tiredly nodded her head and Domi picked up the small girl.
They walked into the small room and she covered the little girl who was also covered in cuts and bruises and laid her down. "Can you sing to me Mama?"
Domi nodded as she moved the hair from her daughter's eyes. She began to sing a Russian lullaby. Whenever she sang her voice sounded so broken. It was from the screaming so she was used to it. When she got to the end of the song she watched as Jane's eyes struggled to stay awake but she lost the fight and drifted off to sleep.
"Good night," Dominika whispered as she leaned over and kissed Jane's forehead.
She got up and walked to her bedroom and changed into a fresh pair of pyjamas. As Dominika stared at the ceiling trying to fall asleep, she couldn' help but remember how this all started.
