Chapter 3: Dominika
She stepped out into the streets of Moscow in a change of clothes and a bag slung over her shoulder. Alex had to go to a separate subway to get home so she was left all alone. In some ways she liked the city when it was night time.
The night life roared as she passed some restaurants where friends and lovers met just to talk. She smiled at the street performers preforming their passion in front of crowds of people. Shops were closing for the night and she watched as the lights of every display window turn off.
She envied the nightlife. She never got to experience it since her parents kept her on such a tight rope. But she would like for just a moment to go out into town during the night and dance in the streets and sit with a lover at a restaurant quietly talking beautiful nothings.
She went nowhere unless if it was to Alex's house. But they expected them to both practice ballet every night they were together. But her parents were totally wrong. The two girls spent all night talking and giggling about girl things. Sometimes they would talk about going out to town to explore but they always didn't and she wondered why.
Sometimes she wondered if she was the one who was doing the ballet or her parents were. They were very strict when it came to ballet. It was as if they wanted her to become this world famous ballerina star who captured the hearts of many all over the world. But she somehow knew that she would never become that. There were many girls in Russia who were good at ballet too, she didn't think she would get out there.
She couldn't have a boyfriend either. She groaned under her breath as she headed down the stairs to the subway and swiped her pass into the machine and went inside to the station and sat on a bench. "I swear, I'll be a virgin until I'm 40 or something," Domi mumbled, drumming her fingers against the bench.
If she even mentioned a boy at the dinner table both of their heads would perk up and say, "Dominika, don't you dare see that boy anymore!" her father would say. They claimed that it was in her best interest so she wouldn't get distracted from what she needed to focus on.
So she made sure she didn't ever mention Vlad Pavlov. But she began to grow restless. She wanted a boyfriend, she wanted a goddamn life! Even Alex's parents saw how extreme this was. She envied Alex. She had boyfriends to count. At sleepovers Alex would gush how they would look naked and how they would feel 'in' her.
Dominika often blushed when Alexandra told her about her sex life. But it didn't help her from not wondering herself.
"But I would never let that man-whore touch me!" Alexandra said with crossed arms one sleepover.
As the train came to a stop, Dominika stood up and walked into the train as the doors swung open. She took a seat at the closest seat fartest away from anybody and quickly looked at her feet. She was glad Alexandra wouldn't go for Vlad because she knew she would go crazy internally if they did.
She remembered that she had her iPod in her bag so she dug around for it and took it out and started to listen to music. It was a good way to ignore anybody who tried to talk to her. As you could tell, she wasn't quite a people person.
But her parents weren't and expected her to be one too. She hated having company over and smiling at them pretending to like them. She didn't like any of her parents friends. They were all annoying and snobbish and childless. Some of them had children but their children were as snobbish and annoying as their parents.
The train came to a stop and she stood up and stepped out of the doors that told her to watch her step. She trudged her way past the fancy streets and to her apartment building where she took the fancy elevator up to her fancy condo and walked into it where her parents were in the kitchen talking.
"Welcome home Dominika!" her mother cheered from where they were. Dominika plopped her bag on the floor and sat herself at the dinner table.
"Is dinner ready?" Dominika, dismissing both of her parents.
"Of course it is," her mother chimed as she brought platters of food out and onto the dinner table. "Now eat up both of you!"
Her father looked at Dominika. "So, how was today's class?" he asked, stuffing food into his mouth.
She played with her food as she replied with a flat. "It was okay."
Her father nudged her on with more questioned an she replied with the usual answers. Then the conversation changed and her parents were talking about politics or something. 'I bet these two haven't banged for years.' she thought as she put a bite of beef in her mouth. She almost choked on the small piece laughing.
"Dominika, are you okay?!" her mother asked, coming over and patting her daughter on the back.
Dominika nodded wordlessly as she forced herself to swallow the chunk. After dinner was done she didn't bother stay for desert. She walked into her room and got her sleep shirt and gym shorts and showered.
Once she got out of the shower she plopped onto her bed and shoved her face into a pillow. "Oh my god, my life is so boring!" she screamed into it.
And her hate of life made her forget for a while about the boy she was thinking about. Just for a second but as she was trying to fall asleep thoughts of him flooded her mind and she let it because she was far too tired to keep them out.
