"Mam, are you ready to order?" the waitress asked, coming back for what had to be the fifth time.I had been sitting in this dumb restaurant for what felt like ages waiting on my boyfriend to show up.
I checked my phone, seeing all of the unopened messages I had sent him asking where he was and if he was almost here. This was the third time this week it had happened, and he had the same excuse as to why he was late each time. Except this was the first time he didn't actually show up.
"Can you give me five more minutes? He said he was almost here," I lied. "He got caught up."
"Yeah, I'll be back. Do you want me to refill your water?" she asked, nodding down to my now empty glass.
"Um, yes please, if you don't mind."
She picked the glass up and walked away back into the kitchen.
I took a quick glance around the room and saw some people staring at me, giving me knowing looks; that I had been stood up by my douche of a boyfriend.
The waitress, Ally was her name, I read her name tag a few minutes ago, came back and set my water on the table before walking back, not even bothering to ask if I was ready to order.
Y/N:
-You're not even coming, are you?
-this is the third time this week, I thought you would actually come this time too
-you know what? things just are not working out here
-I thought these past eight months meant something to you too, but I guess I was just another side chick, wasn't I?
I watched as the messages went from "sent" to "read" as the typing bubble never appeared.
I quickly grabbed my bag and jacket, trying to hold back the tears burning my eyes. I went to stand up as a boy slid into the booth in front of me.
"Sorry I'm late, babe. Traffic is crazy right now," he exclaimed loudly.
I turned towards him and gave him a weird look."I'm Daniel," he introduced himself quietly. "Just go with it, okay? Whoever didn't show up is a dick."
I gave him a smile then set my stuff back down beside me. "I'm Y/N," I said. "Thank you."
He gave me a smile as the waitress came out of the back. "It's about time you get here, I was started to get worried for her," she said. "So, what can I get you guys to eat?"
We both ordered our food and she took the order to the counter.
"So, Y/N, tell me about yourself."
"There isn't much to say," I replied.
"Well, start with how old you are."
"I just turned 17 last week. I'm a junior at West High."
"I turn 18 next month. I'm a senior at East, so I guess that explains why I've never seen you before."
"Yeah, probably. I don't usually go to any school events or anything unless it is for my, well, now ex-boyfriend Keith."
"He the one who didn't show?"
"Yeah, third time he has been late this week. At least the last two times he actually showed up."
"I'm sorry."
"What for? You saved the day. Well, night," I laughed, looking out the window. "What's your favorite color?" I asked.
"Oh, so we're getting to the deep stuff now?" he joked. "Orange."
"Mine is blue. It reminds me of the ocean. My mom used to take me down to the beach at night and we would just walk along the sand with waves crashing against our ankles." I smiled, remembering the memory. "She works a lot now, so we don't really get to do anything like that anymore. But I still like to go walk at night and just feel the cool breeze against my skin." I looked up at Daniel, realizing I just spilt my not-so-sob sob story on him and I haven't known the guy for more than ten minutes. "Sorry."
"No, it's fine. I don't get to see my dad much anymore for the same reasons. My parents are divorced and my mom had full custody, but she let us see him on weekends. He would take me camping every weekend, weather it was in the woods or in his backyard. It was our thing. But when I go over now, I might see him five minutes the entire weekend."
"Here you go. You two enjoy." Ally set our food down in front of us.
"Thank you," me and Daniel said at the same time, causing me to giggle.
Ally smiled and walked away as we began to eat.
"What?" I asked, noticing Daniel staring at me.
He smiled and picked up a napkin, wiping the corner of my mouth. "You had a little something."
I rolled my eyes and continued eating.
"So, what's your favorite show?" He continued, taking a bite of a fry.
"I don't really watch TV unless it's Criminal Minds, but I love The Hunger Games."
"My little sister watches that all the time. I think I could quote every word of it by now."
I laughed and took another bite of my fry. "May the odds be ever in your favor," I said, mocking Effie.
"Do you ever think about if she lays in bed at night and just wonders what would have happened if she moved her hand the tiniest bit to the left?" he asked before taking a bite out of his burger.
"Go sit in a corner and think about what you just said."
-
"Thank you for tonight," I said, walking out of the door. "I had a lot of fun."
"I did too. Maybe it wasn't so bad that you got stood up.” He smiled before realizing what he has just said. “Sorry, to soon," Daniel apologized.
"No, it's fine, really. Things weren't working out anyways," I said, starting to walk down to my car.
"Right. Well, um, I-I was wondering if you-if you would like to maybe go out sometime?" he asked, hope laced in his voice surrounded by nervousness. "On an actual, planned date."
"Yeah. Yeah I would like that."
