I walked down the sidewalk to the driveway I visited every time I went to visit my girlfriend. I walked up to the flower bed and picked a few roses and tulips; they were always her favorite. I turned around to jog back out the driveway when I heard a female voice.
"So, there's my flower thief," she spoke.
I stopped in my tracks and turned around. "I- um... I, uh, I was- was j-ju-"
"Hey bro, chill out," she laughed. "I'm not going to have you arrested for flower theft."
I let out a sigh and nodded my head. "Thank you. I mean, um, I was just- just taking these to m-my-"
"Girlfriend?"
I nodded my head and she smiled.
"Oh, okay. I mean, every girl loves roses and tulips, at least I would hope so." She smiled looking down at the flowers in my hand. "You know, I was really worried about what kind of person was stealing my flowers, even thought some animal was eating them. But you seem like a good kid."
"I-I'm not a kid," I stuttered. "Damnit Jack," I thought. "Should have kept your mouth shut."
"Oh? How old are you then?"
"Eighteen," I mumbled.
"What?"
"Eighteen," I said, a little louder this time.
"Oh, sorry," she said. "You just looked a little younger than most eighteen-year olds. Well, at least the ones in my school. Well, since you are a little older than I thought, I will let you go on one condition."
"Okay."
"You take me to see the girl you're giving these flowers to."
"Oh, um, I don’t know if she would like that. We usually like to spend time together alone."
"Come on, I'm sure she won't mind. I'll walk back or call an Uber. I just want to make sure this girl is pretty enough to warrant flower theft."
"O-okay. I guess I could," I gave in.
"Great. Let me go put some shoes on and I'll be right out." She walked back inside.
I looked down at the bouquet of flowers in my hand. "Why couldn't I just have picked some off the side of the road," I mumbled. "Because Kenzie loves red roses and orange tulips."
"Okay, let's go."
She walked beside me as we walked down the sidewalk together.
"Oh, I'm Y/N, by the way," she said, looking at me.
"Jack," I said. "Li-listen. My girlfriend doesn't live in the, most, ordinary place," I said. "It's not what you're probably thinking," I said.
"Oh?"
"I um, I just thought-" My words were cut off by the arched sign over the entrance that read ‘Springville Cemetery.' "We're almost there," I said.
We walked into the entrance and I saw a look of realization strike her face. "I'm sorry," she said.
"Yeah, she um, probably isn't what you were expecting," I said nervously. We walked down to the grave that read 'Kenzie Cooper, April 15, 1999- October 19, 2017."
"Your- your girlfriend was Kenz?" She whispered.
"Yeah."
"She was my best friend all through middle school. We drifted away once we got to high school." She wiped a tear out from the corner of her eye. "We met online, then my dad found a job for a local company here, and before we moved..." She drifted off before finishing her sentence.
"I was in California, with my band. We were recording when I got the call."
"I'm so sorry, Jack. I didn’t know that-"
"It's fine," I cut Y/N off. I kneeled down in front of Kenzie's grave and removed the old flowers out of the vase and replaced them with a new one. I sat down on the grass and looked at her grave. I saw Y/N sitting beside me crying. I scooted closer to her and wrapped my arm around her shoulder.
She curled into my side as the tears fell silently fell down my face, like they always did, on the 19th of every month.
