I finished getting ready and headed for Aarons house. I needed to tell him immediately.
“Hey, I told you not to worry. You still have five minutes left over!” said Aaron cheerfully. But his face grew worry lines as he saw the expression on my face.
“What’s wrong?” he asked, sincerely.
“I have something to tell you,” I gulped. How do I tell him this?
“Um, well, this morning as I was carrying the bags to the taxi this man came and watched me. And, well, he looked really scary. I know this must sound so stupid but hear me out. When I was getting ready, I noticed the same man watching your house too. It was as if he was calculating the house, like he was imagining the lay out of your house. And then he saw me watching him. And he walked towards me and I swear it looked like he was… he was just so scary looking. And his arms! There were so many scratches and not like by scraping it against something but like actual fingernail scratches. And he was scary looking…” I blurted out. I may have said it too quickly because Aaron took a moment before he spoke up.
“He wears a hoodie?”
“Yes, with ‘South Coast’ written on it in white! Wait, how do you?” Knowing Aaron knew what I was going to ask.
“I saw him around too; I just shrugged it off because I thought he was just an old man walking around.”
“Should we do something or..?”
“Just ignore it, he’s probably just a no one. And plus are we really going to let him ruin our day?” Aaron marched out the door grinning stupidly. He really knows how to make things a small problem.
The day passed, and when the bell went for school to finish, realisation hit me. This was the last day of my high school life. I knew today was it, but it just flew by. Many people were crying knowing they may never see everyone again. I felt a bit teary too.
I bumped into someone, naturally. “Oh, sorry,” I looked up to see Jake standing there.
“Oh great,” I mumbled.
“I heard that,”
I blushed, wait, why am I blushing? He’s a total jerk!
“What?” I demanded.
“I, I just wanted to apologise,” I raised an eyebrow at him.
“A bit overdue.” I said straight up.
“I- I know it wasn’t the best thing to do,” I snorted as he said that. I’m glad he knows.
“I just don’t know how to say it,”
“Obviously,” I commented. He looked a bit taken back, but I don’t care.
“I, uh, I’m sorry Jay. I thought…” he trailed off.
“You thought what?” I asked, feeling a bit annoyed.
“I just thought you liked me, and so I kissed you but then you fought back but I don’t know why I kept going, I’m so sorry Jay,” said Jake, all in one sentence without taking a breather.
“Well, I hope those tutoring lessons paid off. And my names Jacqueline, don’t ever call me Jay.” I stormed off. I thought he was a good guy, but why would he be? He has everything at his fingertips.
I’m going to miss high school and all the memories made there. The 15 kilometre walk-a-thons, the days where we did absolutely nothing and sun baked, soaking in the vitamin D. The cliché groups and messing with the substitute teachers; that was always fun.
Well, my high school life is completely over. The remains of my high school life would have to rely on photos, notes, awards and a box of ‘sentimental’ things that I’ve hoarded over the years. It’s ridiculous, right? How photos and things that have no value at all show six years of your life. Six years of my life in a box. That’s comforting.
“Hey grumpy, why the long face?” asked Aaron as he fell into step with me.
“I, uhh, it’s just, I’m going to miss high school.” I said flat out.
“Aww, cheer up, life isn’t ending, its just the beginning.” Aaron put his arm around me as we walked to bus bay.
“I’m going to miss the beginning,” I mumbled quietly, almost inaudible.
Somehow, Aaron heard me, “I’ll make sure that you’ll look forward to the end.”
***********************
It was 4:30 and Aaron and I were just walking to our house from the bus stop. I stopped in my tracks.
“Aaron, when is your mum going to France?” I asked.
“She already left, why?”
“Oh,” I felt stunned. Was it a coincidence that our parents left on the same day? I shrugged it, pushing that thought away.
“Want to live at my house until your mum comes back?” I asked, hopeful. I didn’t want to be alone in my house, it would be so gloomy.
“Sure thing, I’ll need to pack though.”
“Okay, well, I’m going to dump by bag and box in my house, I’ll stop by and help,” I said as my feet shuffled towards the direction of my house.
I dumped my bag and box on my bed and changed into some comfortable clothing. I also tidied my room up seeing that Aaron is coming over and I want the room to be neat. I looked through the cupboards to see if there was anything good to eat. And there wasn’t. Lucky me. We’ll just have to order pizza or something. It was about 5:00 when I popped by Aaron’s.
I let myself in, he should really lock these doors. Someone could break in.
“Hey, Aaron, I’m here!” I shouted up the stairs. I plopped my house keys into the bowl and headed up the stairs.
“Hey Aaron,” I stopped at his room door, waiting for a reply.
“Aaron?” he was hunched what seemed to be a newspaper article. I couldn’t quite see it but I knew it was newspaper because it was that type of thin paper.
“Aaron,” I dragged his name out. He finally figured that I was there. About time.
“Oh hi,” He looked quite startled.
“What’s wrong?” I let myself in and leaned forward to see what was in his hand. He quickly put it away, trying to be subtle, but I knew him better than that.
I shot him a look but he completely missed it.
“I’m ready, let’s go,” he said, changing the subject.
“By the way, I don’t have food so were going to have to order pizza or something.”
“That’s cool.” He quickly grabbed some horror movies from his cabinet as I opened the door for him.
“Movie night!” He shouted out. I had to laugh, his enthusiasm is way over board but it was hilarious. It was a sight to see.
I watched him lock the house and run across the street.
Another flashback.
I was at the park with the little green eyed boy. We were crossing the park and I saw him run towards the swing set; holding both swings together to save me one. He buckled me into the kid seat as he did in his own swing.
He took care of me, like it was his duty.
