The warm month of June was a time we oddly yearned for. Odd because neither of us were exactly fond of hot weather. But for us, June was the time we could be ourselves proudly and openly. This month belonged to all of us. Pride month. The burning sun beating down on his pale skin. I made a note to pack extra sunscreen. I didn't want my boy to fry himself. Considering we were going to be out there all day, it was kind of unavoidable, but I would try.
"Baby, you almost ready?" I yell up the stairs to him.
"I can't find my suspenders!" He replies. Oh no. He wouldn't let me hear the end of this if I made him go without those damn rainbow suspenders.
"Have you looked in your bag?"
"What bag?"
"The one I made you pack three days ago."
"Oh yeah!" He practically leaps down the stairs, high top vans, rainbow socks, black shorts, and the rainbow suspenders adorned with various pins all on. "I'm ready now."
"Okay." We head to the car. As I drive, Elliott holds my hand.

After the face paint is washed off my face and I've changed into more comfortable attire, I flop down on our bed. He's already under the covers, waiting for me.
"I love you Jordann," I join him under the covers and he crawls into my arms. "I feel so safe when I'm with you. Cared for."
I hold him in my arms. Protected by my strong embrace (there you go, you're strong too).
"I love you too. You mean so much to me Elliott." We lay there, our bodies in each other's arms, craving the other's touch even though there's no space left to fill.
"You know what my favorite part about pride month is?" He asks.
"Hmm?"
"I get to show the world how much I love you. There's no penalty for public displays of affection." He smiles and pecks my lips.
I couldn't agree more.
