The large red wheel sat idly before her, seemingly coaxing her to reach out and spin it. Marie took a deep gulp of air before scanning her eyes across the plethora of names engraved into it, running her hands over the smooth crevices. Jack, Danny, Eli, all names she would give her child in a heartbeat. She glanced down at the newborn baby on her lap, his brown eyes staring back at her with blissful innocence. Marie thought he definitely looked like a Richard, but there were no chances he would end up with the name. After all, there had to be at least a thousand others on the disk in front of her.
"Marie, are you almost done in there honey?" her husband peeked his head through the curtain, his face glistening with excitement, "Or has our baby boy already officially been Named?"
"N- not yet dear. I'm almost done." Marie tried to mask her nervous feelings with a forced smile. When her lover had finally left the makeshift room, she turned back to the taunting red wheel. With shaking hands, she reached out to the silver arrow that would ultimately decide the fate of the baby on her lap. Using all the force she could muster, her hand latched onto the arrow and spun.
Marie couldn't bear to look as the wheel turned into a blur. Instead, she firmly shut her eyes and listened to the clang- clang- clang of the arrow grow increasingly slower before coming to a complete stop. Her eyes flickered open, following the arrow to the name it now rested upon. When she read the neat lettering, her breath hitched in her throat. It couldn't possibly be. Tears started streaking down her face involuntarily. As if sensing that something was wrong, the child on her lap started wailing.
A child whose name was now Chad.
